Pokémon’s documented origin begins with Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, released for Game Boy in Japan in February 1996. The games launched a series shaped by GAME FREAK, Nintendo, and Creatures—not by a single person or a single medium. The real-world creation story is distinct from the still-open questions of fictional Pokémon lore.
What does “Pokémon’s origin story” mean?
It can refer to two different subjects: how the Pokémon franchise was created in the real world, and the fictional origins of Pokémon and their world. The documented production history starts with the video games. Questions about fictional origins may have no definitive answer in the games or screen stories; Pokémon Support says some are intentionally left to fans’ imaginations and interpretations.
Who created Pokémon?
The Pokémon Company describes Nintendo, Creatures, and GAME FREAK as the original authors of Pokémon, with distinct roles in its development. GAME FREAK handled the original planning and development of the video-game series. Nintendo manufactured and sold the video games. Creatures worked on the Trading Card Game and contributed to video games and CG models. This company-level account gives a fuller picture than attributing the franchise’s creation to one person alone.
What was the first Pokémon game?
Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green were the first Pokémon games. The Pokémon Company dates their release for Game Boy in Japan to February 1996 and identifies them as the beginning of the series. These are Japanese launch details, not a claim that the games launched worldwide on that date.

How did the games, cards, and anime begin?
The franchise expanded across different media in stages. The Pokémon Company’s chronology gives these Japanese milestones:
| Medium | Japanese launch | What the date marks |
|---|---|---|
| Video game | February 1996 | Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green for Game Boy |
| Trading card game | October 1996 | Launch of the Pokémon Trading Card Game |
| Television anime | April 1997 | Launch of the Pokémon television anime on TV Tokyo |
The cards and television series were later franchise milestones, not simultaneous launches with the original games. These dates describe Japan; the chronology cited here does not establish worldwide release dates for every format.

What inspired Satoshi Tajiri to make Pokémon?
Shogakukan’s 2018 learning manga, ポケモンをつくった男 田尻智 (roughly, “The Man Who Created Pokémon: Satoshi Tajiri”), presents a child-friendly account of Tajiri’s life and Pokémon’s development. The publisher describes a narrative that includes childhood interests, early game-making, collaborators, and production difficulties.
That book is a useful route into the personal side of the origin story, but its episodes should be attributed to the book rather than treated as independently verified here. Shogakukan’s description establishes what the manga covers, not the independent accuracy of every anecdote. The official company history complements that biographical account by identifying the organizations’ production roles.

Are theories about Pokémon’s fictional origins official canon?
Not necessarily. Pokémon Support says that questions not already answered in the video games, animated movies, or television shows are intended to remain open to fans’ imaginations and interpretations. The guidance, updated January 30, 2026, does not name an individual speaker.
“It is the intent of the Pokémon creators that questions that have not already been answered within the video games, animated movies, or TV shows, be left to the imaginations and interpretations of Pokémon fans.”
Accordingly, a theory about a Pokémon’s fictional origin is best presented as an interpretation unless the games or screen stories establish it. That open-ended lore is separate from the documented history of the franchise’s creation.
