Natasha Richardson fell while taking a beginner ski lesson at Mont Tremblant, Quebec, on March 16, 2009. She initially appeared well, but later developed a headache and was taken to hospitals in Quebec before being transferred to New York. She died two days after the fall, aged 45. The medical examiner’s reported finding was an epidural hematoma caused by blunt impact to the head; her death was ruled accidental.

What happened on the day of the accident?

Richardson fell on a beginner slope during a ski lesson at Mont Tremblant on Monday, March 16, 2009. Contemporary reports said she did not strike another skier or an obstacle, and that the fall initially appeared minor. Reports also said she was not wearing a helmet.

Mont Tremblant spokeswoman Catherine Lacasse told the Guardian that Richardson was laughing and joking after the fall and walked to her room on her own. A resort account quoted by the Los Angeles Times said an experienced instructor called ski patrol. Patrol saw no visible injury but insisted she see a doctor; the resort spokeswoman said Richardson initially told them she was fine.

How did her condition change?

About an hour after the fall, Richardson developed a headache and was taken for medical care. Contemporary accounts describe her first going to Centre Hospitalier Laurentien and then to Sacré-Cœur Hospital in Montreal. On Tuesday, March 17, she was transferred to New York on life support. She died at Lenox Hill Hospital on Wednesday, March 18.

What caused Natasha Richardson’s death?

On March 19, reports said the New York medical examiner found that Richardson died from an epidural hematoma due to blunt impact to the head and ruled her death accidental. An epidural hematoma is bleeding between the skull and the brain’s outer covering.

Medical reporting at the time noted that a person with a serious head injury can initially seem alert before the condition worsens. That general medical explanation does not establish the precise progression of Richardson’s injury, the details of her clinical care, or what any different intervention would have changed.

What is known about the emergency response?

Accounts reported at the time do not fully agree on what happened after the call for help. The resort said ski patrol insisted Richardson see a doctor. Yves Coderre, operations director at Ambulances Radisson, told the Guardian that an initial ambulance crew was sent away without seeing her: “They never saw the patient. So they turned around.” Coderre did not say who told the crew it was not needed.

How did her family and career enter the public account?

Richardson was a British stage and screen performer and part of the Redgrave acting family. Among the performances emphasized in contemporaneous coverage was her Tony-winning role as Sally Bowles in the 1998 Broadway revival of Cabaret.

Her family, in a statement issued through agent Alan Nierob and reported by the Guardian, said: “Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

What can the accident tell skiers about helmets?

Richardson reportedly was not wearing a helmet, but the available evidence cannot show whether one would have prevented her death. A 2009 retrospective study examined 1,013 injured skiers and snowboarders treated at nine facilities; 37.1% of that selected group wore helmets. The study found helmets notably protective in collisions with fixed objects, while also reporting greater head-injury risk in terrain parks than on ski runs regardless of helmet use. Those findings cannot establish what would have happened in Richardson’s particular fall.

Health Canada identifies standards for recreational ski and snowboard helmets, including CSA Z263.1-14, ASTM F2040-18, SNELL RS-98 and EN 1077:2007, or equivalent. Its safety assessment says impact absorption, stability and strap retention matter. These points offer general safety context, not a retrospective conclusion about Richardson’s accident.
