Mary has rejected the claim that the church is a cult, and the couple’s attorney denied that members were forced into poverty. Reporting about a 2026 documentary renewed attention to the dispute, but the allegations described in that coverage have not been independently resolved.
What is Faith Temple Pentecostal Church, and what is Mary Cosby’s connection to it?
Faith Temple Pentecostal Church is in Salt Lake City. Bravo reports that Mary’s grandmother, Rosemary Redmon Cosby, founded the church; Mary is identified as its First Lady, and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr., as its bishop. The church entered wider public view during the first season of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City (RHOSLC).

What did former members allege?
In a 2021 report, The Daily Beast interviewed former members who described pressure to donate, fear of leaving, and what they characterized as spiritual or emotional abuse. One former member disputed calling Faith Temple a cult and argued that the conflict should be handled within the church. These accounts describe the speakers’ experiences and views; they are not a determination that every allegation is true.
The same report quoted a lawyer for Mary and Robert Cosby, who said religious institutions accept donations but do not force parishioners into poverty. The lawyer also called the claim that Mary described herself as God offensive and baseless.

The subject also came up on RHOSLC. In Season 2, former member Cameron Williams alleged on the show that Faith Temple was a cult and that he had mortgaged his house to support it. The Daily Beast later reported that Williams died in 2021. His televised statements remain allegations, not an adjudicated account.
How has Mary Cosby responded?
In a January 2021 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Mary rejected the cult label, saying, “There’s no cult.” She said members’ tithes stayed with the church and that she had preached at Faith Temple for more than 20 years. Those remarks establish her public position; they do not independently verify the church’s finances or the length of her service.
At the RHOSLC Season 6 reunion, Mary said the accusation had followed the church since her grandmother opened it. She suggested that unfamiliarity with the church’s rules, Pentecostal worship, and Black churches in Utah helped explain why people made the claim, and said the allegations hurt her. Bravo reported that the reunion was filmed on December 4, before the documentary series premiered.
What do the reported church split and court judgment establish?
In its 2026 coverage, The Daily Beast reported that Faith Temple split in 1998, when roughly 200 members left with Mary’s mother, Rosalind Cazares. The outlet also reported that a judge ruled in Cazares’s favor in 2007 and ordered Robert Cosby Sr. and the church’s business manager to pay her $1.2 million in a dispute involving church documents. That reported judgment is a historical legal outcome; it is not a court finding about the later allegations of cult practices or financial abuse.

A separate estimate concerns the church’s earlier size: former members told The Daily Beast in 2021 that roughly 500 people attended at its 1990s peak. It is an attributed estimate, not an official membership count.
Did the church close and reopen?
Bravo reported in November 2025 that Faith Temple had reopened after two years of renovations, as Mary described them. She said it had been years since she had stood before the congregation to speak and described opening the doors as opening a new home. In the same Bravo coverage, she said, “My whole point is to help somebody.” The report does not establish the church’s full operating schedule or current membership.

What did the 2026 documentary add to the controversy?
TLC’s The Cult of the Real Housewife brought renewed attention to Faith Temple. In January 2026 coverage of the series, The Daily Beast relayed further claims from former members and family members, including allegations involving surveillance, public humiliation, donations, and labor. The article also included the Cosbys’ lawyer’s denial that members were forced into poverty. The reporting presents competing accounts; it does not independently adjudicate the documentary’s newer allegations.
