Waddingham praised Cruise as “one of the loveliest and encouraging, positive and inspiring human beings I have ever met,” and added, “Isn’t he gorgeous? I have no time for anyone saying anything about him.” TheWrap reported her comments on December 28, 2023, after she discussed working with him on the then-upcoming eighth Mission: Impossible film. TheWrap’s account of Waddingham’s remarks notes that the bracketed name in the first quotation is an editorial substitution; Waddingham’s quoted wording was “him.”

Why did she defend him?
She grounded her opinion in her own experience on set: Waddingham said she had spent five intense days filming with Cruise. Her comments describe how he treated her during that work; the reports do not establish that she was addressing any particular controversy or allegation.
The Independent has described Cruise’s public controversies, including his association with the Church of Scientology, as part of the wider context around criticism of him. Why did the comments resurface in 2025?
Waddingham appeared in a trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, prompting renewed attention to what she had said about Cruise. The Independent published its report on April 8, 2025, but the defense itself dated to the Christmas Day 2023 episode of James Martin’s Saturday Morning.

Waddingham later said she had filmed aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, traveling there in an Osprey helicopter and landing on the moving vessel. Entertainment Tonight reported in May 2024 that she described the ship as carrying “four and a half thousand Naval men and women.”

In May 2025, CBS News identified her character as an admiral aboard a U.S. Navy ship and reported that scenes were filmed on the real USS George H.W. Bush with 4,500 service members aboard. That figure is CBS News’s reported production detail, not an independently verified ship manifest. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning opened theatrically on May 23, 2025, according to CBS News.
