The 2019 dispute began with a producer praising Katy Perry’s creative control, but fans heard an implied comparison with Britney Spears. The distinction matters: Greg Wells’s reported words described Perry’s way of working; coverage documented fans’ interpretation of the contrast, not proof that Wells or Perry intended to insult Spears.
What Greg Wells said in the 2019 Instagram Q&A
On February 1, 2019, Perry shared an Instagram Story featuring a Q&A with producer Greg Wells. In the excerpt reported by BuzzFeed, Wells said people thought Perry was “handed a script like a Britney Spears and told what to sing.” He described that as the opposite of Perry’s approach, saying she told producers what to do, chose people involved in her videos, and drove decisions about singles.

The positive claim was about Perry: Wells portrayed her as an active decision-maker in her music and career. The contentious part was the contrast with Spears. The phrasing could be heard as suggesting Spears was less involved in her own work, but the reports do not establish that this was Wells’s intention—or Perry’s.
Why fans read the comparison as shade
Some Spears fans objected to the implication that she lacked creative agency. The Washington Post and BuzzFeed described fans responding with examples of Spears’s songwriting and other creative contributions. Their response challenged the comparison’s premise; it does not establish that Wells meant to attack her.

- Teenage Dream is the 2010 sophomore album from the American Pop princess Katy Perry
That is why headlines and posts asking whether Perry had “thrown shade” or whether Spears was being described as “handed a script” should be treated as audience interpretations, not settled facts. Perry shared the Q&A, but the available accounts do not document her separately explaining or endorsing an intent to disparage Spears.
The earlier context: Perry’s 2017 Grammy remarks
The 2019 reaction also landed against the backdrop of Perry’s jokes at the 2017 Grammy Awards. On February 12, after being asked about her hiatus, Perry told Ryan Seacrest, “It’s called taking care of my mental health. I haven’t shaved my head yet.” Later that evening, when asked about her blonde hairstyle, she said, “The only thing I have left to do is shave my head, which I’m really saving for a public breakdown.”

Coverage at the time connected those remarks to Spears’s 2007 head-shaving incident. TIME reported on the perceived reference in 2017, and the Los Angeles Times later recounted the comments. The context helps explain why some fans viewed the 2019 comparison as part of a pattern; it still does not prove what Perry or Wells intended in the Instagram Q&A.
What Perry said later—and what it does not establish
In a 2020 Guardian interview later quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Perry spoke about the pressure of intense public scrutiny: “Anyone in this intense a spotlight, they understand that the tightrope just gets tighter and smaller, and that with one word, one costume malfunction, it can all blow up.” That statement addresses the risks of being in the public eye. The cited report does not present it as a direct apology to Spears, nor as an explanation of Wells’s 2019 comparison.

Was there a later explanation from Wells?
The cited coverage does not document a later direct explanation from Wells about the comparison. The original Instagram Story is not a primary transcript in the reports, so the episode is best described using the wording those outlets attributed to him and with the distinction between his reported praise of Perry and fans’ interpretation of its contrast with Spears.
