On April 11, 2024, attorney Gloria Allred said she did not mourn O.J. Simpson, but mourned Nicole Brown Simpson and her family. She argued that the justice system had failed Nicole and battered women, and urged the public to remember the victims. Her remarks came the day after Simpson died.
What Gloria Allred said
Allred, who represented Nicole Brown Simpson’s family, made her statement on April 11, 2024. She said: “I feel that the system failed Nicole Brown Simpson and failed battered women everywhere. I don’t mourn for O.J. Simpson. I do mourn for Nicole Brown Simpson and her family and they should be remembered.” Allred’s official archive dates the statement to that day; ABC7 reported her remarks.
Speaking to CNN, Allred also pointed to the civil case, saying Simpson had been found liable—“that is responsible”—for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. She said she respected the criminal jury’s decision while emphasizing the separate civil verdict. CNN’s April 11 transcript is labeled a rush transcript that may be updated.
Why she centered Nicole Brown Simpson and battered women
Allred’s reaction focused on the victims rather than on mourning Simpson. Her statement framed Nicole’s death as part of what she described as a failure of the system toward Nicole and battered women more broadly. That is Allred’s assessment, not a separate finding by a court.

Her appeal to remember Nicole and her family also redirected attention from Simpson’s death to those whose lives were lost and affected. The Associated Press reported that Simpson died April 10, 2024, at age 76, after prostate cancer.
How the criminal acquittal differs from the civil finding
The outcomes came from separate cases and should not be conflated:
| Proceeding | Outcome | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal case | Simpson was acquitted; the jury found him not guilty of the counts concerning Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman. | The criminal jury did not convict him of the murders. |
| Civil case | A jury found Simpson liable for the wrongful deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. | The civil jury found him legally responsible in that case. Civil liability is not a criminal conviction. |
The civil finding did not overturn the criminal acquittal. Each verdict belongs to its own proceeding and must be described in its own terms. CNN and ABC7 report the distinction between the criminal acquittal and the later civil liability finding.

Allred’s comments were a retrospective reaction on April 11, 2024, not a new statement about a current court proceeding. Simpson died on April 10, 2024; AP reported his age and cause of death at the time.
