The television cast of M*A*S*H changed repeatedly during its 1972–1983 run, and its performers went on to different careers and later reflections on the series. Some left before the finale; others stayed for most or all of the show. Several principal cast members have since died, including Loretta Swit, whose death was reported in 2025. The available record supports a selective retrospective—not a verified 2026 activity update for every performer.

A cast that changed over eleven seasons

This is the story of the television ensemble, not the cast of the 1970 feature film. The Television Academy dates the series to 1972–1983 and records a later spin-off, After M*A*S*H (1983–84). Its cast history shows how the show refreshed its ensemble without simply handing one departing actor’s character to another performer. Television Academy: M*A*S*H cast history.

Performer Character What changed on the series
Alan Alda Hawkeye Pierce One of the longest-serving cast members.
Loretta Swit Margaret Houlihan One of the longest-serving cast members; she later discussed how she developed the role.
Gary Burghoff Radar O’Reilly Left the series in 1979.
McLean Stevenson Henry Blake Left after the third season; Sherman Potter later arrived as a different character.
Wayne Rogers Trapper John Left after the third season; B.J. Hunnicutt arrived as a different character.
Harry Morgan Sherman Potter Joined after Stevenson’s departure, playing a new character.
Mike Farrell B.J. Hunnicutt Joined after Rogers’s departure, playing a new character.
Larry Linville Frank Burns His character’s place in the ensemble was taken by David Ogden Stiers’s new character, Charles Winchester.
David Ogden Stiers Charles Winchester Joined as a new character after Linville’s Frank Burns.
Jamie Farr Klinger Grew from a smaller role into a regular presence.
William Christopher Father Mulcahy Grew from a smaller role into a regular presence.

The show’s departures were part of its structure: Stevenson and Rogers left after season three, and their replacements were not recast versions of Henry Blake or Trapper John. Later, Linville’s Frank Burns gave way to Stiers’s Charles Winchester. Burghoff departed in 1979, while Farr and Christopher became more prominent over time. The Television Academy’s series history also distinguishes the television ensemble from the earlier film cast.

What the performers said and did after the series

The record available here documents later reflection more clearly than it documents complete post-series biographies for every lead. One important source is M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television, a retrospective that aired in 2024. FOX’s December 6, 2023 announcement said the special would include new interviews with Alda, Burghoff, Christopher, Farr, Farrell, Rogers and Swit, alongside archival interviews with Linville, Morgan, Stevenson and Stiers. The distinction matters: an archival interview is not evidence that the person was alive when the special aired. FOX’s announcement of the retrospective.

Loretta Swit on playing Margaret Houlihan

Swit described making a deliberate choice to play Houlihan as a fuller person, even when that complicated the comedy: “Around the second or third year I decided to try to play her as a real person, in an intelligent fashion, even if it meant hurting the jokes.” The Associated Press attributes the remark to Swit speaking with Suzy Kalter, author of The Complete Book of M.A.S.H. Swit also described Houlihan as “a character in constant flux; she never stopped developing.” Associated Press obituary, May 30, 2025.

The Television Academy’s interview archive includes a four-hour oral-history interview with Swit, offering a deeper record of her reflections on her career and the role. Television Academy Interviews: Loretta Swit.

Which principal cast members have died?

The Associated Press reported that Loretta Swit died on May 30, 2025, aged 87. Its obituary identifies her and Alda as the series’ longest-serving cast members. The Television Academy’s history also lists William Christopher, Larry Linville, Harry Morgan, Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson and David Ogden Stiers among cast members who have died. The finale’s place in television history

The series ended with a two-and-a-half-hour finale on February 28, 1983. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that it drew “over 100 million viewers” and called it the most-watched episode of any scripted series ever. FOX’s 2023 announcement separately described the finale as a two-and-a-half-hour telecast and gave a “77 audience share and 60.2 rating.” Those are figures as reported by the respective outlets, not statistics about the cast’s later lives.
