X-Pac heat is wrestling slang for a negative fan reaction that suggests people are tired of a wrestler or their presentation—not simply enjoying the chance to see a villain lose. The term is informal, and its meaning shifts with context: boos alone do not prove that a performer has “go-away heat.”
What “X-Pac heat” means
In common fan usage, X-Pac heat describes an unwanted reaction: viewers dislike or have lost patience with the performer or presentation itself, rather than staying invested in the character as an effective antagonist. Some explanations emphasize the impulse to skip the segment or stop watching.
The phrase is not a formal industry measurement with a fixed threshold. It is sometimes used narrowly for a “go-away” response and sometimes more broadly for dislike of a wrestler or a repetitive or poorly received presentation. It is clearest to explain which sense you mean.
How it differs from ordinary heel heat
A heel is a villain in wrestling storytelling. The audience may boo the character while remaining engaged and wanting to see the hero overcome them. “Go-away heat,” by contrast, describes a response in which people would rather not watch the performer or segment.

| Audience response | What viewers seem to want | Effect on story engagement |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary heel heat | To see the villain lose or face consequences | Viewers remain interested in the conflict |
| Go-away heat, often used interchangeably with X-Pac heat | For the performer or segment to stop taking up attention | Viewers may disengage or skip the segment |
In a Fightful report on a New Day podcast discussion, Big E described go-away heat as making people “not want to watch you,” such as skipping a segment because it “sucks,” rather than wanting to see “that bad guy get beat up.” That is his explanation, not an official definition.
Why it is called X-Pac heat
The name refers to X-Pac, the wrestling persona of Sean Waltman, and the phrase’s use in internet wrestling discussion. The sources available do not establish who coined it or when it was first used. In a 2011 Storm Wrestling Q&A, the respondent said he did not know where the phrase started, so a definitive origin story would go beyond what is established.

Did X-Pac actually have it?
Waltman disputed that the online label accurately described the reactions he received in arenas. In a 2021 interview with Chris Van Vliet, he said, “It was just an internet thing,” and distinguished online chatter from live audience response. He also described go-away heat as “when you’re busting your ass and they are not making a noise.” A WrestleZone recap of the interview likewise reports that he said the online response was not indicative of his reactions in televised matches.
That is Waltman’s account, not proof that no fans used the label about him. An earlier interview recap from 411MANIA also reports that he considered the term a poor description of his heel reactions and did not see a clear difference from the reactions other heels received.

How to tell what a negative reaction suggests
A loud boo is not enough to diagnose X-Pac or go-away heat. Ask what the audience seems to want: a story payoff, such as the villain being beaten, or for the performer or segment to stop appearing. Treat that as a useful interpretation, not an objective test. Live reactions, online commentary and different fans’ uses of the term can diverge.
The broader usage is one reason the label can be inconsistent: some explanations focus on wanting a wrestler to go away, while others include dislike of the performer or presentation beyond the character’s storyline actions. The term is best understood as informal fan vocabulary, not a precise category.
