Azula is commonly interpreted as a fictional name derived from azul, meaning “blue” in Spanish, Portuguese and Galician. That explanation comes from a user-submitted name-reference entry, so it is best treated as a reported interpretation rather than a proven historical origin or confirmed statement of the Avatar creators’ intent. In the story, a fan-maintained Avatar reference says Azula was named after her paternal grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon—a separate explanation that does not establish the name’s real-world etymology.
What does Azula mean?
The commonly reported meaning is “blue,” based on the name’s proposed connection to azul, the word for blue in Spanish, Portuguese and Galician. Behind the Name describes Azula as a fictional name “meant to be derived” from those words, and notes that the entry was submitted by a user. It is therefore more accurate to say Azula is commonly explained as meaning “blue” than to present that derivation as settled fact.
The entry also identifies the name with popular culture and Spanish usage, which it labels modern and rare. That is one reference entry, not a comprehensive survey of how often the name is used or understood.
Where does the name Azula come from?
The available explanation links the fictional name to azul, a word used in Spanish, Portuguese and Galician for “blue.” The name-reference entry notes that azul is of Persian origin, but this does not prove a complete historical path for the fictional name Azula. No creator-confirmed explanation of the real-world etymology is established by the sources cited here.

Ancestry also associates Azula with Spanish azul, but its additional claim of an “Indigenous culture, Mexico” origin is not substantiated here and conflicts with the more cautious account. It should not be treated as an established origin or as evidence for broader cultural symbolism.
Is Azula named after Azulon?
In the Avatar story, a fan-maintained reference says Azula was named after her paternal grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon. This is an in-universe family namesake explanation, distinct from the proposed real-world connection to azul. The same reference links the resemblance to “blue” with Azula’s blue fire, but that does not confirm who chose the name or prove that the creators intended the word association.
