Julien’s Auctions reports the same sale as $1,810,000 and lists a 27% buyer’s premium plus an online service fee, so the published totals should not be treated as if they necessarily use identical fee conventions. Why the “Thriller” jacket leads the list
The record concerns a particular screen-worn object, not merely a jacket with an expensive design. Julien’s describes it as one of two jackets Jackson wore while filming “Thriller,” designed by Deborah Nadoolman Landis. Its black-and-red calf leather, winged shoulders, and “Marc Laurent Paris” label are part of the auction house’s lot description. Julien’s says Jackson gave this jacket to longtime costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush; it is signed on the sleeve and inscribed inside. The auction house also says the other “Thriller” jacket is on loan from the Jackson estate to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. These provenance details are Julien’s account of the lot.

Julien’s describes the design as having sparked a 1980s fashion craze and says it was widely copied for fans. That helps explain why the jacket is culturally recognizable, but replicas are not the historical screen-worn garment and do not share its provenance.

On October 7, 2026, Julien’s announced that a “Thriller” music-video jacket is scheduled to be auctioned on December 7, 2026. As of October 8, 2026, that sale has not taken place, so there is no result to rank. The announcement alone does not establish that the upcoming lot is the same physical jacket sold in 2011. Record claims should be checked again after the scheduled auction.
