Tele- means “far” or “at a distance.” In television, it joins vision to suggest “seeing at a distance”—a fitting name for technology that transmits images across distance.
What does “tele” mean?
Tele- is a word-forming element derived from Greek têle, meaning “far,” “far away” or “at a distance.” The Online Etymology Dictionary’s entry for tele- gives the same core sense: “far, far off, operating over distance.”
How do the parts of “television” fit together?
The word combines Greek-derived tele- with vision, which comes through Latin visio. So “seeing at a distance” is a useful plain-language gloss, but television is not an entirely Greek word.
The Académie française’s ninth-edition entry (2024) describes French télévision as borrowed from English television, and traces tele- to Greek têle, “far, far away, at a distance.” Its definition refers to transmitting images and sounds at a distance.

What did “television” originally refer to?
The early English use named a proposed system for transmitting moving images over distance, including by telegraph or telephone wires. The Online Etymology Dictionary dates the English word to 1907; this is a word-history date, not the date of a particular broadcast or television set.
Was “television” coined in English or borrowed?
The route is not settled in the cited accounts. The Online Etymology Dictionary says the English word may have been formed in English or borrowed from French télévision. The Académie française, in turn, describes the French word as borrowed from English. It is therefore safest to explain the word’s components without presenting one origin route as certain.
