EGOT means winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. Steven Spielberg completed the set on February 1, 2026, when Music by John Williams, a documentary he produced, won the Grammy for Best Music Film at the 68th Grammy Awards. EGOT is an informal label for that achievement, not a separate award.
What does EGOT stand for?
The letters refer to four major American entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Someone described as an EGOT winner has won an award in each of those four categories. The label recognizes a combination of wins; no fifth “EGOT award” is presented. The Associated Press reported Spielberg’s milestone after the 2026 Grammy ceremony.

How did Steven Spielberg become an EGOT?
Spielberg’s final award in the set was a Grammy for Best Music Film. The winning documentary, Music by John Williams, is a portrait of the composer’s life and career. Spielberg was one of its producers, alongside a larger production group; he did not win the Grammy as the film’s composer or director. Amblin’s film page lists him among the producers, and Lucasfilm’s page describes the documentary.
The Grammy was presented at the 68th Grammy Awards on February 1, 2026. The Associated Press reported that the win gave Spielberg his first Grammy and completed his EGOT. The Guardian reported Spielberg said the recognition “means the world to me.” It also quoted him saying: “This acknowledgment is obviously deeply meaningful to me because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams influence on culture and music is immeasurable and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled. I am proud to be associated with Laurent’s beautiful film.”

How rare is EGOT status?
In its February 2026 report, The Guardian counted 22 competitive EGOT winners and separately noted six people whose status involved honorary awards. Those are date-specific counts, not a permanent total. Counts can differ depending on whether honorary distinctions are treated as equivalent to competitive wins, so the category and date matter when comparing figures.
