NPC stands for “non-player character,” a character in a video game who is not controlled by the player. When someone calls a real person an NPC, they usually mean that person seems scripted, predictable, or unoriginal—as if they repeat ideas without thinking for themselves. It is generally a mocking or dismissive label, not evidence that the person lacks independent thought.
What does NPC mean when it is used about a person?
In gaming, an NPC is a character controlled by the game rather than by a player. Applied to a person, the metaphor suggests that they seem like a background character following a script: predictable, generic, or simply repeating familiar lines.
The insult works by implying that the person lacks individuality or agency. That is the speaker’s judgment, not a fact established by using the label.
Is calling someone an NPC an insult?
Usually, yes. In a personal put-down, “You’re an NPC” commonly means “you seem generic or scripted.” In an argument, it may be used to brush off someone’s opinion instead of answering what they said. Its dismissive force comes from treating a real person as though they were a character with no independent point of view.

How does the meaning change with context?

A political use can accuse someone of repeating a group’s talking points. The term became prominent in reactionary online spaces in 2018 as a way to portray liberals and leftists as accepting progressive ideas uncritically. That is one documented strain of the insult, not the meaning of every use.
Where did the insult come from?
The acronym comes from video games and expands to “non-player character.” A peer-reviewed article on the politics of the NPC meme traces an early instance to a July 2016 post on 4chan’s videogames board titled “Are you an NPC?” It describes the meme’s circulation in reactionary online spaces in autumn 2018. A 2018 New York Times account also described users on 4chan and Reddit applying the label to liberals they viewed as brainwashed or parroting left-wing orthodoxy. That is a contemporary account of a particular political context, not a universal definition. Read the article.

Take it as a clue about how the speaker is framing you, not as proof about your character or thinking. The word can be teasing, hostile, political, or literal depending on the setting and tone. If it comes up in a disagreement, the useful question is whether the other person is responding to your actual point or dismissing it with a label.
