“Darth” is a title used before the names of Sith, but official StarWars.com sources do not give it a definitive literal meaning or identify the first Sith Lord to use it. A Legends-era account suggests Darth Andeddu may have been the first; that claim is not settled across continuities. Darth Bane, meanwhile, is known for establishing the Rule of Two—not for inventing the title.
What does “Darth” mean?
In Star Wars, “Darth” functions as a Sith title placed before a name, as in Darth Vader and Darth Sidious. StarWars.com describes the Sith as an ancient order of Force-wielders devoted to the dark side, but its official sources do not provide a literal translation or explain the title’s origin. StarWars.com’s Sith Databank entry and its character entries establish the title’s use, not its etymology.
A Legends reference account proposes a connection to the Rakata word “Daritha,” reportedly meaning “emperor.” That is a proposed etymology within Legends discussion, not a definitive canon definition; the title’s exact meaning remains unestablished in the official sources cited here. The Legends reference discussion likewise notes that no settled etymology is known.
Who was the first Sith Lord to use “Darth”?
There is no confirmed first bearer established by the official sources reviewed. One Legends-era account points tentatively to Darth Andeddu: The Essential Guide to the Force reportedly suggested he may have been the first Sith Lord to use the title. Later retcons complicate the title’s history, so Andeddu is best described as a possible first in one Legends account—not as the undisputed first across Star Wars continuities. The Legends reference entry for Darth Andeddu summarizes that qualification.

Was Darth Bane the first Darth?
Not according to the official account of his best-known achievement. StarWars.com credits Bane with establishing the Rule of Two after the Sith were decimated by the Jedi Knights roughly a thousand years earlier. That rule limited the order to two active Sith: a Dark Lord and an apprentice. It concerns Sith organization, not the origin of the title “Darth.”
“After the Sith were decimated by the Jedi Knights of a thousand years ago, Bane enacted the Sith rule of two: there would be only two active Sith at one time — a Dark Lord to embody the power, and an apprentice to crave it.”

The Darth Bane Databank entry does not say that Bane created the word or was the first to bear it. StarWars.com also discusses Darth Revan as a fallen Jedi turned Sith Lord in a Star Wars games context, illustrating that Sith history is treated in distinct continuity contexts. The Revan feature is not evidence that Bane originated the title.
