ASMR is also a popular kind of online video, and many people watch it to relax or as part of a bedtime routine—even if they never feel the characteristic tingles.
What does ASMR mean?
The term describes a reported sensory experience, not a specific sound or video format. In a 2022 qualitative study, researchers explain that “autonomous” refers to the reaction’s reflexive nature, “sensory” to its physiological character, and “meridian response” as a euphemistic name for the sensation. The term was coined by Jennifer Allen in 2010, according to the study. PLOS ONE’s 2022 study of ASMR also notes that the first recorded online discussion of the sensation was on an internet health forum in 2007.
Whispering is a familiar ASMR trigger and a common video convention, but it is not the definition of ASMR. People also report responses to tapping, hand movements, other sensory cues, or unintentional everyday sounds. Some viewers enjoy videos labeled ASMR for their calming atmosphere without experiencing tingles.
Why do some people get tingles from ASMR?
People who report ASMR describe a distinctive, often pleasant sensory response. A 2018 peer-reviewed study examined people who identified themselves as ASMR experiencers. While watching ASMR videos, participants reported increased pleasant affect; the laboratory study also recorded reduced heart rate and increased skin conductance. These findings indicate measurable responses among the participants studied, not a reaction that everyone experiences. Read the study’s PubMed record.

Researchers continue to study how ASMR works. Proposed explanations involving brain processes or expectation remain hypotheses, rather than settled mechanisms. There is no prevalence figure in the cited sources establishing what proportion of all people experience ASMR.

Online video makes it easy to present soft sounds and small visual details in a close, focused way. Creators may speak directly to viewers or build a gentle scene around sounds such as tapping and whispering. That format suits people seeking a quieter alternative to fast-paced entertainment.

Viewers describe relaxation and personal attention
Qualitative research on ASMR consumers identifies relaxation, social intimacy, and a sense of personal attention among reasons people watch. These accounts help explain the format’s appeal, but they do not establish a single cause of its popularity or mean that every viewer has the same experience.
It has reached a large online audience
Think with Google reported that YouTube’s internal global data recorded more than 65 billion views of ASMR-related videos during January 1–December 31, 2021. That is a platform figure for that year—not a current annual total or an independent estimate of all ASMR viewing. Think with Google’s 2022 article on soothing videos describes ASMR as one of the most-watched soothing-video formats.

A separate 2026 analysis documented 42,268 YouTube videos from 8,587 channels across 34 languages in its defined dataset. Its categories included sleep-related, whisper, visual-trigger, binaural, and drive-themed videos. Those figures describe the study’s corpus, not the full universe of ASMR content or what viewers generally prefer. See the Eindhoven University of Technology research record.
Do ASMR videos help people relax or sleep?
Some people use ASMR videos to relax or as part of a bedtime routine, and qualitative research records sleep-related use. The 2018 laboratory findings describe emotional and physiological responses among self-identified ASMR experiencers; they do not establish ASMR as a clinical treatment, show that it works for everyone, or make it a substitute for medical care.

Children’s experiences have also been studied in a specific context. Ofcom’s report, published November 12, 2025, combined a representative survey of 1,393 UK children aged 11–17 with qualitative interviews involving 30 children in the same age range. The research, conducted by Beano Brain between October 2024 and May 2025, found greater interest in ASMR among younger children and reported that most children described positive or neutral effects. A minority described negative effects, particularly after self-improvement content. These were children’s accounts and perceptions; the report did not assess the content itself. Read Ofcom’s report.

No. The tingling response is what the acronym names, but viewers may enjoy ASMR-labeled content for its soft sounds, focused visuals, or calming presentation without reporting tingles. Experiences vary: one person may respond to whispering, another to tapping or hand movements, and another may simply find the video relaxing.
