TBH means “to be honest.” It’s an informal abbreviation used in texts and on social media to introduce or emphasize what someone really thinks. You can put it at the start of a thought or add it at the end as a casual afterthought.
What does TBH mean in a text or on social media?
TBH is short for “to be honest.” Cambridge describes it as an abbreviation used in messages and on social media when someone gives an opinion (Cambridge Dictionary). Oxford similarly defines it as a way to indicate that a message reflects what the writer really thinks (Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries).
It is informal, so it fits casual conversation better than formal writing. In a report, application, or other formal text, write “to be honest” in full—or simply state the point directly.
How do you use TBH?
TBH can appear before the thought it introduces or after a statement as an afterthought. It may be written in uppercase or lowercase.

| Placement | Example | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| At the beginning | TBH, I’d rather stay home. | Introduces a candid preference. |
| At the end | I don’t care tbh. | Adds a casual afterthought. Cambridge gives this as an example. |
| After a statement | I don’t know anything about it, TBH. | Marks the statement as candid. Oxford gives this as an example. |
What tone does TBH convey?
TBH signals that a speaker is presenting a candid opinion, preference, or admission, but it does not prove that the statement is objectively true or make it kind. Depending on the surrounding message, it can sound sincere, casual, wry, blunt, or provocative. Dictionary.com notes that the abbreviation appears in several kinds of remarks, including opinions, preferences, admissions, and wry or provocative comments (Dictionary.com).
Read the whole message to judge the tone: “TBH, I’d rather stay home” sounds like a straightforward preference, while a pointed remark may use the same abbreviation to soften—or sharpen—its delivery.

Where did the social-media use come from?
A 2012 TIME guide described a Facebook game in which people asked others to like a status in exchange for a TBH: a candid opinion left in the comments (TIME). That is a documented past format, not evidence that the game remains popular today. The available dictionary etymology describes TBH in the broader context of digital communication but does not establish a precise inventor or first-use date.
