That makes the opening of Andor Season 1, set primarily in 5 BBY, roughly five years before the Death Star battle. The series then moves toward that event: Season 2 progresses through 4 BBY, 3 BBY, 2 BBY, and 1 BBY, before connecting directly with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
How the BBY and ABY system works

#1 Best Overall
- BBY means Before the Battle of Yavin.
- ABY means After the Battle of Yavin.
The system works like a historical calendar centered on one major event. Years before Yavin are labeled BBY; years afterward are labeled ABY. The numbers therefore count down as the story approaches the battle.
For example, 5 BBY comes before 4 BBY, just as five years before an event comes before four years before it. 1 BBY is immediately before the Battle of Yavin. It does not mean one year after the battle.
| Label | Meaning | Position relative to Yavin |
|---|---|---|
| 5 BBY | Five years before the Battle of Yavin | Farther from the battle |
| 4 BBY | Four years before the battle | Closer |
| 3 BBY | Three years before the battle | Closer still |
| 2 BBY | Two years before the battle | Near the final buildup |
| 1 BBY | One year before the battle | Immediately before Rogue One and A New Hope |
| 0 BBY/ABY reference point | The Battle of Yavin | The Death Star attack in A New Hope |
Where does Andor fit in the Star Wars timeline?
Andor is a prequel to Rogue One. Lucasfilm describes the story as taking place during the five-year period leading to the film, following Cassian Andor long before he becomes the committed Rebel operative seen in Rogue One.
The broad chronological sequence is:
Andor Season 1 → Andor Season 2 → Rogue One → A New Hope
| Story | BBY placement | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| Andor Season 1 | Primarily 5 BBY | Cassian is pulled into Luthen Rael’s network, takes part in the Aldhani operation, survives Imperial imprisonment, and returns to Ferrix as the rebellion becomes more open. |
| Andor Season 2, episodes 1–3 | 4 BBY | The story resumes one year after Maarva Andor’s funeral and the Ferrix uprising. |
| Andor Season 2, episodes 4–6 | 3 BBY | The Ghorman crisis develops into a major front in the growing rebellion. |
| Andor Season 2, episodes 7–9 | 2 BBY | Political and military pressure intensifies as the resistance becomes more organized and dangerous to the Empire. |
| Andor Season 2, episodes 10–12 | 1 BBY | Cassian reaches the final stage of his transformation and moves directly toward the circumstances of Rogue One. |
| Rogue One | Immediately before Yavin | Jyn Erso and Cassian’s team steal the Death Star plans. |
| A New Hope | Battle of Yavin | Luke Skywalker leads the attack that destroys the first Death Star at Yavin 4. |
Why the BBY numbers count backward in Andor
The apparent reversal is simply a countdown. Andor begins at 5 BBY, when the Battle of Yavin is still five years away. Season 2 then jumps forward through the intervening years:
5 BBY → 4 BBY → 3 BBY → 2 BBY → 1 BBY → Rogue One → the Battle of Yavin
Thus, a lower number means the story is closer to the Battle of Yavin. A character living in 4 BBY is not later in the calendar than someone living in 5 BBY by accident; the story has moved one year closer to the reference event.
The countdown also gives Andor an important dramatic shape. As the BBY number falls, Cassian moves from an isolated survivor concerned mainly with money and personal loyalties toward a Rebel operative prepared to sacrifice himself for a larger cause. That connection between calendar and character arc is an interpretation, but it follows the five-year journey established by the series and its direct relationship to Rogue One.

Season 1: the 5 BBY foundation
Season 1 is broadly set in 5 BBY. It shows the political and personal conditions that make the later Rebel Alliance possible, rather than presenting Cassian as a fully formed hero from the beginning.
At first, Cassian is capable, resourceful, and self-preserving. His choices are driven by survival, money, and personal relationships. His meeting with Luthen places him inside a wider anti-Imperial operation, while the Aldhani heist proves that scattered resistance efforts can deliver a strategic and symbolic shock to the Empire.
The second half of the season shows the Imperial response. Security powers expand, arrests become more aggressive, sentences become harsher, and imprisonment is turned into an industrial process. Cassian’s time at Narkina 5 is therefore central to the chronology and to his political awakening; it is not a disconnected side plot.
By the Ferrix finale, Maarva’s funeral speech and the uprising that follows make the conflict more public. The rebellion is no longer only a collection of secret operations. Imperial repression and local resistance are now visibly colliding.

Official material establishes the season’s year-level placement and its five-year relationship to Rogue One, but there is no complete, universally published day-by-day calendar for every episode.
Season 2 compresses four years into four story arcs
Season 2 is designed as a historical progression rather than a continuation that unfolds over a few weeks. Its 12 episodes are arranged in four three-episode blocks, each covering one year on the road to Rogue One.
Rank #3

- Product Type: Physical Movie
- Brand: Paramount
Episodes 1–3: 4 BBY
The opening block takes place in 4 BBY, one year after Maarva’s funeral and the Ferrix uprising. Cassian is more experienced and more firmly aligned with the Rebel cause. Bix, Brasso, and Wilmon Paak continue to live with the consequences of the Imperial crackdown.
Episodes 4–6: 3 BBY
The second block is set in 3 BBY and focuses substantially on Ghorman. The crisis there becomes an important front in the developing rebellion. Luthen sends Cassian and other operatives to assess the situation, showing how resistance activity is expanding beyond isolated local actions.

Episodes 7–9: 2 BBY
The third block occurs in 2 BBY. Political and military pressures converge more sharply, including Mon Mothma’s increasingly dangerous break with the Imperial order and Cassian’s continuing work for the rebellion.
Episodes 10–12: 1 BBY
The final block takes place in 1 BBY. Cassian’s transformation reaches its final stage, and the season moves directly toward the version of the character introduced in Rogue One. The ending is not the Battle of Yavin; it is the final bridge into the film.
How Andor leads into Rogue One and A New Hope
The endpoint of Andor is sometimes described too broadly as “the Battle of Yavin.” That is not quite right. The series ends immediately before the events of Rogue One, at the point where Cassian is entering the final stage of his work for the rebellion.
In Rogue One, Jyn Erso and Cassian’s team steal the Death Star plans. The film ends with those plans being passed into the mission that brings Princess Leia into A New Hope. The original film then culminates in the Rebel attack on the Death Star at Yavin 4—the event used as the BBY/ABY reference point.

A useful way to remember the timeline
Think of the years as a countdown to the Death Star attack:
- 5 BBY: Season 1 begins; Cassian is drawn into the resistance.
- 4 BBY: Season 2 begins, one year after the Ferrix uprising.
- 3 BBY: The Ghorman crisis becomes a major concern.
- 2 BBY: The rebellion’s political and military pressures intensify.
- 1 BBY: Season 2 concludes and points directly toward Rogue One.
- Yavin: Cassian’s mission in Rogue One leads into Luke’s attack in A New Hope.
Rewatching Andor by its BBY chronology
For viewers who want to revisit the series while tracking its year-by-year progression, Andor Season 1 4K Ultra HD is a natural physical-media option. Disney and Lucasfilm announced 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions of the first season, including SteelBook packaging, bonus features, and concept-art cards. That recommendation applies to Season 1; an official Season 2 DVD or Blu-ray release should not be assumed without a separate studio announcement.
A physical copy can be particularly useful for this series because Season 2’s four-year structure rewards comparing Cassian’s changing alliances, the Empire’s escalating response, and the rebellion’s growing organization across each three-episode block.
Common BBY mistakes
- Reading 5 BBY as five years after Yavin. It means five years before the battle.
- Assuming the whole series takes place in one year. Season 1 is primarily 5 BBY; Season 2 advances through 4, 3, 2, and 1 BBY.
- Confusing BBY with a release-date code. BBY describes in-universe chronology, not when a movie or episode premiered.
- Saying Andor ends with the Battle of Yavin. It ends immediately before Rogue One, which then leads into the battle in A New Hope.
- Assigning excessive precision to the episodes. The official timeline supports year-level placements and the four-arc structure, not a complete day-by-day calendar.
Bottom line
BBY means “Before the Battle of Yavin.” Andor begins primarily in 5 BBY, then Season 2 advances through four years—4 BBY, 3 BBY, 2 BBY, and 1 BBY—until the story connects directly with Rogue One. From there, the stolen Death Star plans lead into A New Hope and the Battle of Yavin itself.
