“6-7” (usually spoken as “six-seven”) is a meme catchphrase from Philadelphia rapper Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot (6 7).” In current youth use, it usually has no single agreed definition. Children may use it as a deliberately random joke, an in-group signal or a response to hearing the numbers six and seven. It is often accompanied by an up-and-down, palms-up hand gesture.
Where “6-7” came from
The phrase is tied to Skrilla, the Philadelphia rapper whose real name is Jemille Edwards, and his song “Doot Doot (6 7).” The Washington Post reported that the song appeared in December 2024. The Associated Press later described how an early leak circulated before an official release in 2025. Those are separate stages: the track was heard online first, then formally released.
The Washington Post connected the numbers in the song with Philadelphia’s 67th Street. That is useful song context, but it is not a confirmed definition of the expression children use in classrooms, playgrounds or sports settings. In an Associated Press report published February 16, 2026, Skrilla’s stated position was that “6-7” means whatever people want it to mean.
How the phrase became a meme
Short social-media videos and basketball edits helped move the lyric beyond the song. Charlotte Hornets player LaMelo Ball became a particularly recognizable association because he is listed at 6 feet 7 inches tall. The phrase then appeared in school corridors, classrooms, sports venues and ordinary conversation.

No reviewed reporting identifies one definitive first viral post. Instead, the spread looks like a chain reaction: a repeated lyric, remixable video formats, a memorable basketball connection and children repeating the expression in person.
| Stage | What the reporting establishes |

| December 2024 | The Washington Post reported the song’s release. |
| 2025 | The Associated Press reported an official release after an earlier leak; basketball and social-media circulation broadened the audience. |

| February 2026 | The Associated Press reported Skrilla’s view that listeners can assign their own meaning and documented continued use in classrooms and sports. |
What does “6-7” actually mean?
There is no universal translation. The same child might use it as a punchline, a nonsense reply, a reaction to hearing either number or simply a way to join a shared joke. Another child may use it differently. Treating the phrase as a secret code with one fixed answer gives it more precision than the reporting supports.

That ambiguity is part of the appeal. Skrilla’s reported explanation leaves room for listeners to interpret the phrase, while the meme’s repetition lets children recognize who understands the reference. The song’s possible 67th Street reference should therefore be described as background, not as the mandatory meaning of every “six-seven” a child says.
How people say and perform it
- The words are often drawn out: “siiix-seeeven.”
- Speakers commonly alternate their hands in an up-and-down motion with their palms facing upward.
- Either number can trigger the phrase, although some users wait until “6” and “7” occur together.
- Timing and gesture vary by person; there is no official pronunciation or choreography.
The gesture and exaggerated cadence make the expression recognizable even when the surrounding conversation has nothing to do with the song.

Why kids keep repeating it
Reporting describes the phrase as silly, playful and ironic rather than as a statement with a serious proposition. Los Angeles Times interviews with educators and students portrayed repetition as a way to get a reaction and participate in a shared joke. USC digital-media and psychology professor Karen North described it as a kind of “secret code” that can make children feel part of the in-group.
That does not mean every child has the same intention. One student may be quoting the song, another may be copying friends, and another may be testing whether an adult recognizes the meme. Attention can reinforce the behavior: attempts to ban or dramatically react to the phrase may supply the reaction that keeps the joke going, a dynamic noted in school reporting.

Is “6-7” harmful, demonic or a cult reference?
The available reporting does not establish that interpretation. The Associated Press reported Skrilla rejecting claims that the phrase was a cult or demonic reference. A child saying “six-seven” is not, by itself, evidence of harmful intent. Context still matters, as it does with any repeated joke: adults should address harassment, disruption or targeted insults if those accompany the phrase, rather than treating the numbers themselves as proof of misconduct.
What parents and teachers should do
- Ask for context. Find out whether the child is quoting the song, responding to a number, copying friends or trying to provoke laughter.
- Set a behavior rule, not a mystery rule. It is reasonable to prohibit shouting during instruction or directing a joke at another student without claiming that the phrase has a hidden universal meaning.
- Avoid amplifying the bit. A calm reminder is less likely to turn an ordinary meme into a high-value classroom performance.
- Check for a separate problem. If “6-7” accompanies bullying, exclusion or threats, address that conduct specifically.
What about 6-7 merchandise?
The Associated Press reported a 6-7 T-shirt at an arena shop, and the Washington Post described related merchandise. Those reports show commercial interest, not proof that every online listing is authorized or currently available. Seller identity, licensing, fabric, fit and return terms need to be checked separately. Current Amazon inventory and a universal official merchandise partner are not established by the reporting.

How long will the meme last?
Its future prevalence cannot be reliably predicted. Linguistics professor Salvatore Attardo told the Washington Post, “Memes are fads. They last very little time and then they disappear.” That is a general observation about meme culture, not a dated forecast for “6-7.” The documented reports show where the phrase appeared on particular dates, not how many children use it now or when usage will end.
