What Documentaries and Books Cover Operation Entebbe?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the fullest modern book-length account, start with Saul David’s Operation Thunderbolt: Flight 139 and the Raid on Entebbe Airport. Hachette describes it as a history built from classified archival documents in four countries and interviews with Israeli soldiers and politicians, hostages, a Kenyan government member and a former terrorist; Google Books lists the 2015 Little, Brown edition at 464 pages.

For a near-contemporary account, choose William Stevenson’s 90 Minutes at Entebbe, with material by Uri Dan, first published by Bantam Books in 1976. On screen, separate nonfiction from dramatization: Operation Thunderbolt: Entebbe is identified as a television documentary lead whose exact production details still need confirmation, while Victory at Entebbe (1976), Operation Thunderbolt (1977), Raid on Entebbe (1977) and Seven Days in Entebbe (2018) are dramatic films.

At a glance: which Entebbe title should you choose?

Title Type and date Best use Important qualification
Operation Thunderbolt: Flight 139 and the Raid at Entebbe Airport — Saul David Historical book, 2015; 464 pages in the Little, Brown edition A modern, book-length account with a broad documentary and interview base The archival and interview description comes from the publisher; it is context for the book, not proof that every interpretation is uncontested
90 Minutes at Entebbe — William Stevenson, with material by Uri Dan Near-contemporary book, Bantam Books, 1976; a CiNii record lists 216 pages Seeing how the raid was narrated close to the event Different editions have different pagination and bibliographic records
Operation Thunderbolt: Entebbe Documentary title reported as a 2000 television documentary A possible nonfiction screen account The year, director, runtime, production and present availability were not confirmed through a primary film catalog
Victory at Entebbe Dramatization, 1976 One of the first television-era dramatic retellings It is a scripted adaptation, not independent historical corroboration
Operation Thunderbolt Dramatization, 1977 A second early dramatic treatment Do not confuse this film with the raid’s name or Saul David’s later book
Raid on Entebbe Dramatization, 1977 Another major entry in the 1970s film cycle Scenes should be read as adaptation
Seven Days in Entebbe (also 7 Days in Entebbe) Dramatic feature, 2018 A later interpretation that intercuts the hostage-hijacker story with Israeli government debate Director José Padilha and contemporary coverage acknowledge dramatic liberties

The books

Saul David’s Operation Thunderbolt

Saul David’s Operation Thunderbolt: Flight 139 and the Raid on Entebbe Airport is the strongest starting point if you want a modern narrative rather than an immediate 1970s report. The title uses “Operation Thunderbolt,” the name associated with the Israeli raid, so it can be confused with the 1977 film of the same name.

Hachette’s description says David used classified documents from archives in four countries and interviewed people connected to several sides of the episode. Those interviewees include Israeli soldiers and politicians, hostages, a member of the Kenyan government and a former terrorist. That range matters because it gives the book more than a single military viewpoint: the operation can be examined alongside hostage experience, political decision-making and regional involvement.

Google Books identifies the 2015 Little, Brown edition as a 464-page history title. That page count belongs to that edition; it should not be assumed for every international printing or electronic version. The publisher’s account of the source base is useful when judging the book’s scope, but it remains a description supplied by the publisher. Readers looking for disputed details should compare the narrative with archival or scholarly work rather than treating promotional language as a neutral verdict.

William Stevenson’s 90 Minutes at Entebbe

90 Minutes at Entebbe by William Stevenson, with material by Uri Dan, offers a very different reading experience because it was published by Bantam Books in 1976, close to the event itself. A CiNii library record identifies a New York Bantam edition of 216 pages. Its proximity to the episode is its defining value: it shows how the raid was framed before later archival releases, memoirs and historical reassessments could reshape the story.

A near-contemporary account can preserve immediacy, names and narrative emphases that later histories may smooth into a single retrospective explanation. It can also reflect the information and assumptions available at the time. Read it as evidence of early reporting and interpretation, not automatically as the final word on every disputed episode.

Why the edition of 90 Minutes at Entebbe matters

Readers may encounter a later Skyhorse edition that should not be conflated with the 1976 Bantam record. Skyhorse lists a 2015 edition with ISBN 9781510734388 and 240 pages, and describes the work as first written in 1976.

Edition Publisher and year Pages Identifier or catalog note
Original identified in library catalog Bantam Books, 1976 216 CiNii records a New York publication
Later reissue Skyhorse, 2015 240 ISBN 9781510734388; described by the publisher as a work first written in 1976

When ordering or citing the book, match the ISBN, publisher and page count to the edition you actually need. A 216-page catalog record and a 240-page reissue are not contradictory evidence about the event; they are different bibliographic objects. Skyhorse’s description is also promotional framing, so it should not be presented as an independent historical assessment.

The documentary lead: Operation Thunderbolt: Entebbe

Operation Thunderbolt: Entebbe appears in listings as a television documentary, often reported as a 2000 production. The title is worth pursuing if you specifically want nonfiction footage or interviews, but its basic production details were not confirmed through a primary film or archive catalog. Before treating it as a definite 2000 film, verify the exact year, director, runtime, production company, distributor and whether the listing refers to a documentary rather than a dramatized program.

This uncertainty is especially important because “Operation Thunderbolt” is used for several different things: the raid itself, Saul David’s 2015 history and a 1977 dramatic film. A library or broadcaster record should identify the format and creators. If a listing supplies only a title and a year, do not infer that it is the same work as the book or the 1977 feature.

How to check a documentary listing

  1. Confirm that the record labels the work documentary, television documentary or nonfiction, rather than drama or feature film.
  2. Match the title with a director, production company and runtime. These details distinguish an original program from a re-edited broadcast or a similarly titled dramatization.
  3. Check the release territory and format. A television title may have aired under a different name or may survive only in a library, archive or regional catalog.
  4. Separate what the program shows from what it claims. Interviews and archival footage are primary material, but narration still reflects editorial choices.

The 1970s dramatizations

A scholarly account identifies three prominent early screen dramatizations: Victory at Entebbe (1976), Operation Thunderbolt (1977) and Raid on Entebbe (1977). Together they form a 1970s film cycle produced while the episode was still close to public memory.

Film Year How to approach it
Victory at Entebbe 1976 Read as a scripted contemporaneous retelling; compare its choices with the 1976 Stevenson/Dan book rather than treating scenes as documentary proof
Operation Thunderbolt 1977 Check the film’s credits carefully because the title is identical to the raid’s name and similar to Saul David’s book
Raid on Entebbe 1977 Another dramatized version from the same early cycle; useful for studying how the event was adapted for television-era audiences

Dramatization can make a complex hostage crisis legible by giving characters dialogue, private meetings and continuous scenes that no camera recorded. That is also its limitation. A performed conversation, reconstructed action or compressed timeline is an adaptation choice. Use the films to compare narrative framing, not to establish an event statistic or settle a disputed detail.

Seven Days in Entebbe: the later dramatic interpretation

The 2018 film Seven Days in Entebbe, released as 7 Days in Entebbe in some markets, revisits the episode with a different emphasis from the 1970s cycle. Production notes attribute its dual-story structure to director José Padilha: the film follows the hostages and hijackers while also intercutting debate within the Israeli government over whether to negotiate.

That structure is a statement about the film’s perspective, not proof that every scene reproduces the historical record. A 2018 TIME interview with historian Saul David discusses the film’s adaptation and notes that it takes dramatic liberties. When a scene appears to represent a disputed decision or conversation, consult David’s book or another historical source and attribute the interpretation rather than citing the movie as independent evidence.

The film is therefore most useful for readers interested in how political choices, hostage experience and public spectacle can be presented together. It should be paired with a factual account, especially if you are using it for teaching, research or a documentary-program comparison.

How to choose by purpose

If you want one comprehensive book

Choose Saul David’s Operation Thunderbolt. Its 2015 publication date, 464-page length and publisher-described archive and interview base make it the most developed single-volume starting point in this list.

If you want a view close to 1976

Choose Stevenson and Dan’s 90 Minutes at Entebbe. Select the 1976 Bantam edition if contemporaneous publication context is your priority, or identify the 2015 Skyhorse reissue by its ISBN and 240-page listing when that is the copy available to you.

If you want to compare historical memory on screen

Watch the 1976–77 dramatization cycle as a group, then compare it with Seven Days in Entebbe. The comparison reveals changes in emphasis—from early dramatized retellings to a later film that foregrounds the hostages, hijackers and Israeli cabinet debate—without pretending that any one screenplay is a neutral record.

If you specifically need nonfiction film

Investigate Operation Thunderbolt: Entebbe, but verify its identity first. The documentary label and reported 2000 date are not supported here by a primary catalog record, so a responsible recommendation should wait for confirmation of the exact production.

A practical reading-and-viewing order

  1. Begin with David’s modern history to establish a broad chronology and identify the people and decisions that later films dramatize.
  2. Read the 1976 Stevenson/Dan account next, noting where a near-contemporary narrative uses different emphases or terminology.
  3. Watch one or more of the 1976–77 dramatizations and mark scenes that appear reconstructed, compressed or invented for dramatic continuity.
  4. Use Seven Days in Entebbe as a later interpretation, paying particular attention to its intercutting of hostage experience and Israeli political debate.
  5. Only label Operation Thunderbolt: Entebbe a confirmed documentary in a program or bibliography after checking a primary catalog or distributor record.

Availability, territories and citation checks

No current authorized streaming, rental or physical-media listing was established for these titles. Availability can change by country, platform and format, and older television films may circulate under alternate titles. Check a local library catalog, broadcaster archive or rights-holder listing rather than assuming that a search result represents a current legal stream.

For books, record the publisher, year, page count and ISBN of the physical or electronic edition in hand. For films, record the exact title variant, year, director, format and territory. These checks prevent three common errors: citing a reissue as the original publication, treating a dramatization as a documentary and confusing a film called Operation Thunderbolt with Saul David’s book.

What these works can establish—and what they cannot

Source type Useful for Do not assume
Modern historical book Synthesizing archival records, interviews and later perspective That publisher descriptions settle every scholarly disagreement
Near-contemporary book Showing early reporting, language and interpretation That closeness to the event guarantees complete or final information
Documentary Presenting interviews, archival footage and a nonfiction argument That an unverified listing has confirmed production details or that narration is free of editorial framing
Dramatized film Showing how filmmakers interpret characters, politics and public memory That performed dialogue, reconstructed action or compressed chronology is archival evidence
