What Do Caterpillars Eat, and How Do You Care for Them Safely?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Caterpillars do not share one universal diet. Each species depends on particular host plants, so the safe rule is to identify the caterpillar—or the plant where you found it—before offering food or touching it. Monarch caterpillars need milkweed, black swallowtails use carrot-family plants such as dill and parsley, and painted ladies commonly feed on thistles, hollyhocks, and mallows. Unidentified caterpillars should be observed without direct handling because some have hairs or hooks that can sting.

What caterpillars eat

A caterpillar is the larval stage of a moth or butterfly. Its food is usually the leaves or other tissues of a specific host plant. The adult insect may later drink flower nectar, but nectar plants are not a substitute for the larval host plant. A female chooses host plants for laying eggs because newly hatched larvae need them immediately.

Some caterpillars eat leaves, while others consume flowers, fruit, stems, seeds, or stored plant material. A plant that supports one species may be useless—or unsafe—for another. The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) therefore recommends identifying the insect before choosing food or a control method.

Common examples

Caterpillar Host-plant examples What the example means
Monarch (Danaus plexippus) Milkweeds (Asclepias species) Milkweed is larval food. Adult nectar plants do not replace it.
Black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) Dill, parsley, carrot, fennel, and other carrot-family herbs These familiar plants are useful clues, not a universal recipe for unidentified caterpillars.
Painted lady (Vanessa cardui) Thistles, hollyhocks, mallows, and other reported hosts The list is illustrative rather than exhaustive.
Other moth and butterfly larvae Species-specific leaves, fruit, stems, flowers, or stored materials Identification is needed before supplying food or treating a plant.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension and the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources describe these host-plant relationships as species-specific. If you cannot identify the caterpillar, note its color, markings, body shape, location, and the exact plant it was eating, then ask a local County or University Extension office for help.

Identify a caterpillar before touching it

Appearance alone is not a reliable safety test. Some harmless-looking larvae have urticating hairs or spines; others have hooks or irritating structures. NPIC warns that “Some even have hairs or hooks that can sting when touched.” Do not pick up an unidentified caterpillar with bare fingers, place it on a child’s hand, or brush it off clothing.

A safe identification routine

  1. Stop handling it. Keep hands, pets, and children away until you know the species.
  2. Photograph it in place. Take a clear top view and side view, including the plant and nearby leaves. Do not move it solely for a better photograph.
  3. Record the host plant. Note whether it was on milkweed, dill, parsley, a tree, a vegetable, a houseplant, or stored material. The plant is often the strongest identification clue.
  4. Contact local expertise. A County or University Extension office can help distinguish a butterfly larva from a pest species and advise whether collection is appropriate.
  5. Do not apply pesticide while uncertain. Sprays can kill beneficial butterfly and moth larvae, and the correct treatment depends on the identified species and the plant.

If a suspected stinging caterpillar contacts skin, avoid rubbing the area. Follow local medical guidance, especially if pain, swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread reaction develops.

If you find one in the garden

In most cases, the safest care is to leave the caterpillar on its host plant. Watch from a short distance, keep the plant free of insecticide, and let natural enemies and weather take their course. UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management (updated October 2025) notes that many plants tolerate substantial leaf loss and that predators and parasitoids often provide control naturally.

When not to intervene

  • The caterpillar is feeding normally and the plant is not at risk of severe damage.
  • You have not identified the species or confirmed that it needs a different host plant.
  • You are considering collecting it only for convenience or entertainment.
  • The plant is part of a butterfly garden where insecticide would defeat the purpose of the planting.

When an Extension diagnosis is useful

Ask for help if a large number of larvae suddenly appear, a valuable crop is being stripped, the caterpillar is on a houseplant, or the insect may be a stinging species. Provide photographs and the host-plant name. Do not assume that every hairy caterpillar is dangerous or that every smooth green caterpillar is harmless; identification should come first.

Intentional indoor observation: a monarch example

Indoor rearing is a specialized example, not a general recommendation for every caterpillar. Illinois Extension’s monarch guidance describes using containers for eggs and young larvae and a taller enclosure for the stage when a caterpillar wanders, attaches, and forms a chrysalis. The equipment does not correct a wrong food plant, poor hygiene, low ventilation, or unsuitable temperature.

Food and preparation

  • Offer fresh milkweed only to monarch larvae. Do not substitute cut flowers or adult butterfly nectar plants.
  • Illinois Extension advises washing milkweed gathered for caterpillars before placing it in the enclosure.
  • Replace leaves as they dry or wilt. Drying leaves may not provide enough water, even when they still look edible.
  • Remove old leaves, frass, and debris regularly so waste does not accumulate around the larvae.

Choose a container for the life stage

Stage Suitable arrangement Essential features
Eggs and very young caterpillars Small, clean container Fresh food, ventilation, and a surface that can be cleaned easily.
Growing caterpillars Roomier container or rearing cage Enough space for feeding, air circulation, and daily removal of waste and wilted leaves.
Pre-pupal wandering and hanging Taller enclosure Vertical clearance and a secure place to attach a silk pad and hang undisturbed.
Chrysalis and newly emerged adult Clean enclosure left undisturbed Space for the adult to hang, expand, and dry its wings before release.

Commercial cages are optional equipment. Compare any habitat by ventilation, cleanability, stability, and height—not by a product label. A cage is appropriate only when you have identified the species and can supply its host plant.

Handle as little as possible

Illinois Extension’s instruction is concise: “Avoid handling the caterpillar. When moving it, move it on the leaf.” A larva may already have attached a silk pad before molting. Pulling it from that surface can injure it or interrupt the molt.

A motionless caterpillar is not necessarily dead. Stillness can occur during molting, and a caterpillar preparing to pupate may stop feeding and seek a hanging position. Do not poke, shake, turn, or relocate one that is attached or forming a chrysalis.

Hygiene, disease, and cleaning

Monarch larvae kept together can spread pathogens, particularly when containers are crowded or leaves and waste remain damp. Illinois Extension’s 2015 guidance discusses disease prevention, stale leaves, and cleaning procedures. It includes specialized bleach-wash instructions for eggs, leaves, and containers. Those concentrations and steps should be followed only from the complete current Extension guidance; do not improvise a bleach mixture for ordinary observation.

Daily checks

  1. Look for fresh food, normal feeding, and adequate ventilation.
  2. Remove wilted leaves and frass without touching the caterpillar.
  3. Check that the enclosure is dry enough to avoid persistent condensation but not so dry that food wilts rapidly.
  4. Confirm that a larva preparing to molt or pupate has not been disturbed by cleaning.
  5. Separate any sick or dead larva only if you have species-specific instructions and can do so without damaging healthy individuals.

Do not crowd larvae simply because they are the same apparent species. If you cannot maintain clean containers and fresh host plants, outdoor observation is safer and less stressful for the insects.

From chrysalis to release

When an adult monarch emerges, leave it hanging until its wings expand and dry. Do not release an adult whose wings are still soft, folded, or wet. Illinois Extension’s 2017 guide advises release on a rain-free day when temperatures are above 55°F. That is Illinois Extension’s regional guidance, not a universal biological threshold; weather, season, and current local recommendations should control the decision where you live.

Before collecting or raising monarchs, check local rules. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources’ 2025 material includes a California-specific legal note about monarch handling and raising. A state-specific requirement should not be generalized nationally, so consult the relevant wildlife or Extension authority in your jurisdiction.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

Mistake Why it causes problems Safer alternative
Offering any leafy vegetable to an unknown caterpillar The larva may require a particular host plant and refuse the substitute. Identify the insect or return it to the plant where it was found.
Giving monarch larvae flowers or sugar water Those are not replacements for milkweed during the larval stage. Provide fresh, washed milkweed.
Picking up an unidentified caterpillar Hairs, spines, or hooks may sting or irritate skin. Photograph it in place and ask Extension for identification.
Pulling a resting caterpillar from a leaf It may be molting or attached by a silk pad. Move the entire leaf only when necessary.
Using insecticide in a butterfly garden The treatment can kill the caterpillars the garden is intended to support. Accept limited damage and rely on identification and natural enemies.
Keeping larvae in a crowded, dirty container Waste, stale leaves, and pathogens build up quickly. Use a clean, ventilated enclosure and check it daily.

A practical decision guide

  1. Found on a plant outdoors? Leave it there unless the plant faces serious damage or the species needs expert intervention.
  2. Want to provide food? Match the food to an identified species and its documented host plant.
  3. Unsure whether it can sting? Do not touch it; photograph it and contact Extension.
  4. Planning indoor monarch observation? Prepare fresh milkweed, a clean ventilated container, and enough vertical space for pupation before collecting.
  5. See a still or attached larva? Assume it may be molting or pupating and leave it undisturbed.
  6. Ready to release an adult? Wait until the wings are dry, then follow local weather, wildlife, and Extension guidance.

The central rule is simple: identify first, match the host plant, and minimize handling. For most caterpillars, protecting the plant where they were found is better care than moving them into an improvised cage.
