Matthew Reeve recalled that his first words to his father after Christopher Reeve’s 1995 accident were, “As far as I remember, my first words were just, ‘I love you. We’re here.’” His sister Alexandra remembered how their mother, Dana, prepared the children for the hospital visit. The recollections do not establish that all three children said the same words.
What did Matthew say to his father?
In a later interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, Matthew Reeve remembered his first words to his father after the accident: “As far as I remember, my first words were just, ‘I love you. We’re here.’” The qualification matters: Matthew was describing his own memory, not speaking for all of his siblings. The ABC interview transcript records the exchange.
How did Dana prepare the children for the visit?
Alexandra Reeve Givens recalled that Dana walked the children to see Christopher and explained what to expect. In Alexandra’s account, Dana told them, “It’s gonna look really scary, but he’s still there. Just talk to him. Ignore everything else. Just talk to him.” Alexandra also remembered being told she could hold her father’s hand.
Her recollection gives context to the children’s first encounter after Christopher’s severe injury: their mother encouraged them to focus on him and speak to him, even though seeing him could be frightening.

What did Will remember?
Will was just shy of three when the accident happened, according to the report on the family’s interview. He later recalled that Dana involved him in ways appropriate to his age, including staying near his father, touching him, and helping with his legs. That is Will’s separate recollection; it is not the source of Matthew’s remembered words.
Where did the family share these memories?
The siblings discussed their memories with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America in an interview connected with the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. The conversation revisited the first time they saw their father after the 1995 equestrian accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. The documentary connection is also identified in this Good Morning America segment listing.

How did the family maintain familiar routines?
In the interview, Will described dinner as family time and said the family did not discuss specific medical matters at the dinner table. That is the family’s recollection of their own routine, not a general account of caregiving or a claim that every family should follow the same approach.
