His retrospective account is one source—not a substitute for the police-affidavit reporting, Rihanna’s own accounts, or the legal record.
What Brown said in the 2017 documentary
In excerpts from Welcome to My Life reproduced by Hot 97 on August 16, 2017, Brown said: “I hit her with a closed fist, I punched her.” He also said that seeing the photograph of Rihanna’s injuries would haunt him forever. These are Brown’s statements as quoted in coverage of the documentary, not an independent reconstruction of every detail of the assault. Hot 97’s 2017 report

The documentary revisits the incident years later from Brown’s perspective. Its account should be read as his recollection and presentation of events, rather than as a neutral or complete record.
What the police-affidavit reporting and court outcome establish
ABC’s reporting on the police affidavit says the argument began after Rihanna read a text message on Brown’s phone from another woman. The assault occurred on February 8, 2009. That account is attributed to the affidavit as reported by ABC; it is distinct from Brown’s later documentary narration. ABC’s report on the affidavit

Brown pleaded guilty. ABC reported that his sentence included five years of probation, six months of community service, and one year of domestic-violence counseling. Those legal outcomes are separate from how Brown later described the night. ABC’s coverage of the case
Brown’s 2009 expression of regret
In a September 2, 2009 interview on Larry King Live, Brown said: “I really regret and I feel totally ashamed of what I did.” This earlier statement, recorded in CNN’s transcript, predates the 2017 documentary and should not be conflated with the later account. CNN’s interview transcript

Rihanna’s accounts of the assault
Rihanna discussed the assault in a 2009 interview with Diane Sawyer. ABC’s report about that interview also covered Brown’s sentence. Her perspective is not interchangeable with Brown’s later retelling. ABC’s coverage of Rihanna’s interview
In 2012, Rihanna spoke with Oprah Winfrey about the night. OWN’s program description identifies the subject and notes Brown’s guilty plea. This is another public account from Rihanna, given in a separate interview and at a different point in time. OWN’s program page

How to understand the different accounts
- Police-affidavit reporting: ABC reported what the affidavit said about the incident and the argument’s reported beginning.
- Brown’s 2009 interview: CNN recorded his expression of regret and shame.
- Rihanna’s interviews: She spoke about the assault with Diane Sawyer in 2009 and Oprah Winfrey in 2012.
- Brown’s 2017 documentary: He described punching Rihanna retrospectively and discussed the photograph of her injuries.
These sources differ in speaker, timing, and purpose. Brown’s admission that he punched Rihanna and his guilty plea should not be softened into a merely mutual disagreement; nor should his documentary narration be presented as the only account of the assault.
