Authorities said Austin had communicated with the juvenile through social media and had traveled from Belmont, Ohio. Contemporary coverage described the trip as more than 400 miles; that is an approximate distance reported by news outlets, not a verified route measurement. USA TODAY and The Charlotte Observer reported the distance.
What charges were reported
Initial coverage reported a statutory sex offense charge involving a child. A March 8 local report said two felony counts of soliciting a child by computer were later added. These are reported charges and allegations, not proof of guilt or a court judgment. WBTV’s March 8 report describes the additional counts.

March 2024 coverage described Austin as an independent Chick-fil-A franchise owner. A company spokesperson told WBTV that Austin would not be present at the restaurant while the investigation and legal process continued, and said the company had a zero-tolerance policy for the type of serious conduct alleged. In its March 2025 fact-check, USA TODAY reported that an employee said the location had a new owner. Neither that report nor the March 2024 coverage establishes a verified current ownership record.
