Ethiopian runner Lamecha Girma fell with about 200 metres left in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final at the Paris 2024 Olympics on 7 August. He was carried from the track on a stretcher, and the official result records him as Did Not Finish (DNF). Contemporary reporting said he was wearing a neck brace and was taken to hospital for assessment; that describes the response at the time, not his current health.
What happened to Lamecha Girma?
Girma was running in the leading pack as the final lap began. World Athletics reported that he fell hard with roughly 200 metres remaining and lay motionless on the track before being carried away on a stretcher. The fall ended his race in the Olympic final.
Peacock commentator Leigh Diffey, quoted in contemporaneous reporting, said: “In 40 years of commentating running and the steeplechase, I have never seen a fall that heavy.”
Why was Girma taken off the track on a stretcher?
A neck brace was fitted before Girma was moved from the track. A People report carried by Yahoo News on 8 August 2024 said he received on-site medical care and was transported to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital for further assessment. Paris 2024 organizers said he received “immediate care from the on-site medical teams” and that they were in contact with the Ethiopian National Olympic Committee.

Those reports describe the immediate response after the fall. They do not establish a diagnosis or provide a current medical update. World Athletics’ December 2024 season review said Girma did not race again that season while recovering. The sources cited here do not establish his health or competition status in October 2026.

Girma had qualified for the final after running 8:23.89 in his heat on 5 August 2024. The final took place on 7 August at 21:43, according to the official result. These times record race performance, not injury severity or recovery.
