Cheryl Cole’s message after Liam Payne’s death was a plea for dignity: she asked people to remember the person behind the celebrity coverage and to consider how reports and images might affect their son, Bear. She did not discuss the cause of Payne’s death or assign responsibility.
What Cheryl Cole said
On October 18, 2024, two days after Payne died, Cole published her first public statement since his death, according to TheWrap’s report. She wrote: “As I try to navigate this earth shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I’d like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being,”

Her message objected to coverage and images she considered exploitative. She said she was especially troubled by the possibility that Bear would encounter such material about his father in the future: “What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days.”
Cole also urged people to remember Payne’s family relationships, writing: “Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7-year-old son.” The age description reflected Bear’s age when TheWrap published its October 2024 report; it is not a statement of his current age.

Why she spoke out
Cole’s central concern was the human cost of sensational coverage for people grieving, particularly Bear. Her appeal asked readers to consider whether they would want their own child or family to encounter similar reports or comments about someone they loved. TheWrap reproduced excerpts from Cole’s Instagram post; it is reporting of her statement, rather than the original post itself.
What her statement did not address
Cole’s message was about grief and media treatment. It did not explain how Payne fell, make a claim about his state at the time, or say who was legally responsible. Those questions belong to the investigation and court proceedings, not to her statement.

What official findings and proceedings said
Argentine forensic findings
In a November 7, 2024 update, Argentina’s Public Prosecutor’s Office said autopsy doctors concluded that Payne died from multiple trauma and internal and external hemorrhage caused by the fall. The prosecutor also reported toxicology findings involving alcohol, cocaine and prescribed sertraline. Its account said forensic evidence indicated Payne was not fully conscious at the time of the fall. These are findings and conclusions attributed to the prosecutor and forensic work, not statements made by Cole; they do not establish motive.
Argentine criminal proceedings
The prosecutor’s appellate update said proceedings and pretrial detention for two men accused of supplying drugs were upheld. Three people who had faced criminal-negligence charges were acquitted of those charges at that stage. The appellate ruling did not resolve an issue concerning alleged supply or facilitation by one of those people, which the prosecutor said could remain under investigation.
On June 6, 2025, the prosecutor said two defendants would face oral trial on paid drug-supply charges. The assigned national criminal court declared itself incompetent and transferred the matter to the Buenos Aires City judiciary. That update described a change of venue; it did not report a trial date, verdict or conviction.
UK inquest status as of May 8, 2026
ITV News reported that senior coroner Crispin Butler told a pre-inquest hearing that no further evidence disclosure had arrived from Argentina since the previous review. The inquest was adjourned pending another pre-inquest review. This is a dated procedural update, not a final inquest finding.
