Madison Maidenberg said she found him in a frightening, confusing state. Those are their accounts of the scene; the available reporting does not independently establish a medical explanation for his condition.
What happened in the Mexico scene
During a gathering with the newly engaged couples, Joe drank at the group event and returned to the hotel room. Madison later checked on him, and the aired scene showed him struggling to follow their conversation and becoming defensive. AOL’s recap of the People interview provides additional context about the scene (AOL).
Joe’s explanation: he drank too much
In remarks to People relayed by TheThings, Joe described taking full advantage of the open bar and said he regretted drinking that much. He acknowledged that he could have paced himself better, saying emotions were high and everyone was having fun before he “probably got the worst of it.” He also said, “I mean, I did not need to drink that much, but it was a lot.” TheThings published its account on October 10, 2025 (TheThings).
Madison’s account of finding him
Madison told Swooon that she expected to reconnect with Joe after the gathering. When she returned, she found him napping; as she tried to wake him and check on him, she became concerned and unsure whether he needed help. She described it as “definitely kind of a scary moment.” Her account describes what she experienced in the room; it does not contradict Joe’s later explanation of his drinking (Swooon).

What viewers did not see—and what remains unknown
TheThings also quotes Madison describing the incident as “actually worse than” the aired scene and recalling that Joe questioned why cameras were present, despite filming being planned. That off-camera detail is Madison’s recollection as relayed by TheThings, not independently verified footage.
Joe’s account supports the straightforward explanation that he drank too much; the reporting does not establish a diagnosis, toxicology finding, or other independently confirmed cause. Speculation about drugs or another medical explanation should not be treated as fact. The cited coverage also does not establish the couple’s current relationship status.
