What was Chappell Roan wearing at the 2026 Grammys?
Roan’s custom Mugler ensemble paired a sheer georgette négligée dress with a sheer red-garnet cape. The Associated Press reported that she removed the cape on the red carpet to reveal the dress beneath. Vogue described the material as completely sheer and quoted Roan telling E!’s Zuri Hall, “I like breaking the mold.” (Associated Press; Vogue)
“Nude” is headline shorthand for the look’s transparent construction and exposed styling. It does not mean Roan appeared without a garment: coverage identifies a dress and cape as parts of the outfit.
Were the nipple rings real?
The sources do not establish that Roan had real nipple piercings. The Recording Academy says the look included pastie prosthetics and nipple rings; Vanity Fair describes the apparent rings as prosthetics applied to her chest. The outfit drew on Mugler’s Spring/Summer 1998 couture collection, particularly the Spring 1998 runway presentation. Vogue identifies Erica Vanbriel as the model who wore the original piercing dress. The archival reference is more than a color or silhouette echo: the original runway look is known for using rings in the dress’s suspension, while the 2026 styling added the cape, prosthetic details, and medieval-inspired temporary tattoos noted by the Recording Academy. The available reports support the collection reference and these design details; they do not establish that every construction detail exactly reproduces the 1998 garment.
