In a 2025 New Yorker interview, Cass Sunstein recalled that Henry Kissinger attended a party for Sunstein’s book about Star Wars. Sunstein said Kissinger was initially puzzled by the project, then saw themes of families, governments and freedom in the saga. The anecdote came in response to a question about Kissinger’s relationship with Sunstein and his wife, Samantha Power, and their commitments to human rights.
What Sunstein said about Kissinger and the book
Isaac Chotiner’s New Yorker interview, “Can Liberalism Be Saved?”, was published on September 23, 2025. Chotiner asked Sunstein how he reconciled his and Samantha Power’s closeness to Kissinger with the human-rights commitments Sunstein discusses in his writing.
Sunstein answered with a story about Kissinger attending a party for The World According to Star Wars. In Sunstein’s account, Kissinger was at first perplexed that Sunstein had written a book about the franchise. He then said he could see that it was about families, governments and freedom. Sunstein described Kissinger’s curiosity and generosity as “incomparable.”
That is Sunstein’s characterization of a personal interaction. It records how he remembered Kissinger’s response to the book; it does not establish Kissinger’s views on the book beyond the anecdote, or amount to a judgment about his public record.

The book behind the anecdote
The World According to Star Wars, by Cass R. Sunstein, was published by Dey Street Books. Harvard Law School’s media-mentions archive describes the book as using the saga as a lens for examining the world. The interview’s story is about Kissinger attending a party for the book, not endorsing it.
What the exchange does—and does not—say about Kissinger
The anecdote sits beside a question about human rights, but Sunstein’s answer focuses on Kissinger’s personal curiosity and generosity. Sunstein also said he had not particularly studied Kissinger’s role in government. Those points are important to a fair reading: the interview conveys Sunstein’s personal account, not a developed assessment of Kissinger’s policies or historical record.

Andrew Gelman later criticized Sunstein’s answer in a February 2026 post hosted by Columbia. That is Gelman’s interpretation of the exchange, not additional evidence about the party or Kissinger’s official record. The interview itself does not resolve broader arguments about Kissinger’s record or Sunstein’s motives.

The interview ranges beyond this anecdote, including liberalism, human rights and the rule of law. At the end, Sunstein said he would not object if the Kissinger portion received less emphasis, since it could dwarf the rest of the conversation. The Star Wars story is memorable, but it is one exchange within a broader interview.
