It can capture roughly 1,000 frames per second at 4K DCI-style resolution, but it is not the channel’s only camera—and the striking results depend just as much on lighting, lenses, precise timing and post-production as on the camera body.
The Phantom Flex4K is the best-known answer
Gavin Free has described the Phantom Flex4K as one of the team’s principal cameras, and an AbelCine interview identifies it as their main 4K high-speed camera, often used around 1,000 frames per second. It is a professional high-speed digital camera built to record brief events at frame rates far beyond the slow-motion modes in ordinary cameras.
The Flex4K’s published specifications show why “4K at 1,000 fps” needs a little precision: its maximum listed 4096×2304 mode reaches about 938 fps, while 4096×2160 reaches about 1,000 fps. The same camera can record faster if resolution is reduced.
| Flex4K recording mode | Approximate maximum frame rate |
|---|---|
| 4096×2304 | 938 fps |
| 4096×2160 | 1,000 fps |
| 1920×1080 | 1,977 fps |
| 1280×720 | 2,932 fps |
These are manufacturer capability figures, not a claim about the setting used for every video. See the Phantom Flex4K specifications for the published modes.

What the frame rate means when you watch
Capture frame rate is how many images the camera records each second. Playback frame rate is how quickly those images are shown—often 24, 25 or 30 fps. Divide the capture rate by the playback rate to get the approximate slow-motion factor.
- 1,000 fps played at 30 fps is about 33.3 times slower than real time.
- 1,000 fps played at 24 fps is about 41.7 times slower than real time.
- 5,000 fps played at 30 fps is about 166.7 times slower than real time.
So a headline frame-rate number is only part of the story: the resolution at that rate matters, as does the playback rate of the finished video.
Why their footage looks sharp and cinematic
Recording more frames reveals motion that would otherwise pass too quickly to see clearly, but frame rate alone does not guarantee a sharp image. Fast action needs a short exposure to limit motion blur. Short exposures let in less light, and high frame rates increase the demand on the lighting setup. This is why a high-speed shoot can need powerful lights even when the scene looks simple.

The Flex4K uses a 4096×2304, 12-bit CMOS sensor with 6.75-micron pixels, according to Phantom’s technical data sheet. The camera’s standard mount is PL, the professional cinema-lens mount. Free has discussed using PL lenses and favoring prime lenses when possible, in part because fast lenses help when light is limited; the appropriate lens still depends on the shot’s framing, focus distance and camera configuration. He discusses lens mounts and camera choices in a Wired interview.
Lighting, focus, composition and the event itself matter too. The team’s subjects are chosen and staged so that a transformation, impact or burst of motion reads clearly in the frame. A camera cannot rescue inadequate light, missed focus or a visually confusing setup.
The Flex4K is not their only high-speed camera
The Slow Mo Guys have used different Phantom cameras for different jobs. Interviews mention the Flex4K alongside models such as the Phantom V2511 and Phantom v1610. The v1610 is associated with extremely high-speed work, including a cited underwater-bullet example recorded at 27,450 fps. That kind of rate can be useful when maximum temporal detail matters more than 4K resolution.

The practical choice is a trade-off among frame rate, resolution, sensitivity, recording window and available light. Indexed 2026 episode descriptions also refer to a Phantom VEO 4K and an Ember 2.5K in particular videos; those episode-level references do not establish a single camera as the channel’s current standard.
What happens after the camera captures a shot
Short bursts go to RAM first
Unlike a conventional camera that is designed to record long takes directly to an inexpensive memory card, a Phantom captures high-speed footage into internal RAM. The Flex4K documentation lists 64GB and 128GB RAM configurations. Available clip duration depends on the specific configuration and recording mode, including resolution, frame rate, bit depth, file format and trigger settings, so there is no single useful clip-length figure for every setup. The workflow is typically to trigger a short capture, review it, then transfer selected footage before shooting again. Phantom describes the broader camera, media and workflow ecosystem on its Flex4K page.

Trigger timing is critical because the event may last only a fraction of a second. If the trigger window is wrong, the moment can be missed; focus can also be difficult when depth of field is shallow. High-speed footage creates substantial transfer and backup demands, so data handling is part of the shoot rather than an afterthought.
Sound is often handled separately
The dramatic soundtrack should not automatically be assumed to have been recorded in sync by the Phantom. An interview with Free describes using real-time audio from a regular camera as a guide or placeholder and handling sound in post. The finished audio may be separately recorded, synchronized, edited or designed to suit the slowed image.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why not use a mirrorless camera instead?
A modern mirrorless camera or smartphone can be the sensible choice when 120 or 240 fps is enough. Consumer cameras are generally more convenient for long takes, autofocus, portability, in-camera audio and cost. They are not necessarily the right tool for recording fleeting events at hundreds or thousands of frames per second.

Professional Phantom cameras are designed around high-speed capture, triggering, specialized memory and data transfer. That capability brings trade-offs: shorter capture windows at demanding modes, major lighting needs, specialist workflow and a higher production budget. The best choice depends on what the shot requires:
- Social or everyday slow motion: use a phone or mirrorless camera if its available frame rates and image quality are sufficient.
- Fast events that need more temporal detail: consider renting a dedicated high-speed camera and planning the lens, lighting and data workflow together.
- 4K-class capture around 1,000 fps: a Flex4K or VEO4K-class system may suit a carefully staged professional production.
- Extremely fast events: a specialized high-speed model may be more appropriate, particularly when resolution can be traded for frame rate.
Buying, renting and the real production cost
Older ABC News coverage put the Phantom Flex4K at roughly $150,000, but that is an approximate historical media-reported figure, not a current manufacturer list price or a 2026 quote. Vision Research’s public product information does not provide a simple current purchase price. For a professional project, rental is a more realistic route than buying a camera outright.
Phantom’s rental information lists two-day, weekly, monthly and custom periods, with packages and accessories varying by camera and production needs. A budget may also need to cover lenses, media, lighting, shipping, insurance, crew, power, data management and post-production. The Slow Mo Guys’ official site also provides a high-speed-camera-hire enquiry route, without publishing a public package price.
Rental quotes are not directly comparable without specifying the model, mount, media, support and accessories. Phantom also lists the VEO4K-PL, with published modes including approximately 938 fps at 4096×2304 and 1,000 fps at 4096×2160. Its product page lists 36GB or 72GB RAM options and a Super 35-format sensor. See the VEO4K-PL specifications and rental details before planning a package.

Common pitfalls in high-speed shooting
- Underexposure: short exposures and high frame rates can leave too little light for a clean image.
- Missed timing: inadequate pre-trigger or post-trigger settings can exclude the critical instant.
- Focus error: fast lenses and close subjects can leave very little depth of field.
- Unstated resolution: a frame-rate claim is incomplete unless the recording resolution is given.
- Rolling-shutter artifacts: fast rotation or some LED lighting can produce distortion or banding; the Flex4K-GS adds switchable global-shutter capability, as described in its technical documentation.
- Data bottlenecks: high-speed files and transfers can overwhelm ordinary storage workflows.
- Unsafe setups: projectiles, pressure, fire and collapsing objects demand professional risk assessment and protective measures; slow-motion filming is not a reason to attempt hazardous experiments casually.
