Maher described the dinner as a chance to speak face to face rather than trade insults at a distance. He said he had no negotiating authority and was not attending a summit: “I have no power. I’m a comedian and he’s the most powerful leader in the world.”
His account of the evening
Maher said he brought a printed list of almost 60 insults Trump had directed at him and asked Trump to sign it. Maher recalled that Trump signed with good humor, showed him the Oval Office, joked with him, and gave him hats without asking him to pose in one. He said they spent over two and a half hours together. Those details and figures are Maher’s account of the private encounter.

Maher said he did not feel he had to be guarded around Trump: “I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him.” He added, “I’m just telling you what I saw, and I wasn’t high.”
Why did Maher call Trump “gracious and measured”?
Maher’s description referred to how Trump treated him during that particular private meeting. “Trump was gracious and measured, and why he isn’t that in other settings, I don’t know,” Maher said on Real Time. He contrasted his personal impression of the dinner with Trump’s public persona; it was not a general endorsement of Trump’s conduct or policies.

What did Maher and Trump discuss?
Maher recalled discussing Iran’s nuclear program and the Obama-era nuclear deal, Gaza, and other policy questions. He said he challenged Trump over withdrawing from the Iran agreement and called parts of Trump’s Gaza plan “wacky.” Maher also said they agreed on some positions. These are his recollections of a private conversation, not a jointly confirmed account or transcript.
Did the dinner change Maher’s views of Trump?
No. Maher said the dinner did not make him MAGA or stop him from criticizing the president. In the monologue, he pointed to what he described as the trade war, disappearing people, rule by decree, threats to judges, and cuts to government as matters he would continue to criticize. Those were Maher’s characterizations of Trump’s actions and policies.

What is independently established about the account?
RealClearPolitics reproduced Maher’s monologue transcript and video on April 12, 2025, providing the principal record of what he said publicly the previous day. The anecdotes about the dinner, the discussion, and Trump’s manner come from Maher’s own account. The Associated Press later recapped that account in a March 26, 2026 report about Maher and Trump’s fraught relationship; that report did not independently verify what happened at the dinner.
The AP also noted a disagreement about Maher’s state of mind: Trump later said Maher was nervous and scared, while Maher said he was not scared. Those competing statements do not independently establish how Maher felt during the private meeting.
