Drew Barrymore surprised Ryan Gosling with a Gertie-inspired look during an interview about Project Hail Mary on The Drew Barrymore Show, in a segment dated March 24, 2026. Gosling called the reveal “so surreal”; the conversation also returned to the flowers in E.T. and what they meant to Barrymore’s character. Paramount Press Express published the episode context and transcript excerpt.
What happened in the interview?
Gosling appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show to talk about his film Project Hail Mary. Barrymore greeted him with a look inspired by Gertie, the character she played as a child in E.T. The show’s official video page dates the segment March 24, 2026. Watch the segment on the show’s official video page.
According to the episode transcript excerpt from Paramount Press Express, Gosling reacted, “This is so surreal.” Barrymore joked about her transformation: “It turned into more of Cindy Brady than Gertie, but we get the gist.”
Why did Barrymore bring up E.T.’s flowers?
The exchange also touched on one of the film’s memorable visual details: the flowers connected to E.T.’s condition. Barrymore said the film shaped her love of flowers, explaining that when E.T. was unwell, “the flowers represented his health.” She recalled them looking “erect and abundant and happy” when he was alive. Her remark linked the costume surprise to a broader memory of the film and its imagery.
