Labubu is the sharp-toothed, rabbit-eared character hanging from handbags, backpacks and luggage in viral photos—but calling it a rabbit or a single type of doll misses the story. Labubu is a monster character created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, then developed into a global collectible line by POP MART.
The 2025 surge came from a particularly portable product: a plush Labubu pendant with a metal loop or key ring. It combined the visibility of a fashion accessory with the uncertainty of a blind-box collectible, turning a designer-toy character into one of the internet’s most recognizable bag charms.
What is Labubu?
Labubu is the best-known character in The Monsters, a fantasy universe created by illustrator and artist Kasing Lung. The character first appeared in Lung’s The Monsters story series in 2015, which drew on European and Nordic fairy-tale influences.
Labubu is usually shown as a small, furry, elf-like creature with long pointed ears, large eyes and a wide, toothy grin. The design is deliberately caught between cute and unsettling: soft fur and a childlike scale sit alongside a mischievous expression and rows of teeth.

Labubu is officially a monster, not a rabbit. The rabbit description comes from its ears and general silhouette, and “rabbit doll” has become a common shorthand online. It is more accurate to think of Labubu as a character that appears in many different collectible formats.
Lung partnered with Chinese collectible-toy company POP MART in 2019. That partnership brought The Monsters characters into vinyl figures, plush products, accessories and larger display pieces.
Why are Labubus called dolls?
“Doll” is an informal catch-all term. POP MART’s catalog includes several distinct product types:
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| Vinyl figure | A hard plastic collectible intended mainly for display |
| Vinyl plush doll | A larger figure combining a vinyl head or body with soft plush elements |
| Plush pendant | A small stuffed or partly vinyl character fitted with a loop or ring |
| Bag charm or phone charm | A compact accessory designed to hang from a bag, phone or other item |
| MEGA figure | A much larger, premium display collectible |
| Home goods and accessories | Products using The Monsters and Labubu designs beyond figures |
The products are sold under the THE MONSTERS name, while Labubu is the character most people recognize. A search for “Labubu doll” may therefore lead to a plush pendant, a vinyl figure, a keychain-sized charm or a large display model.
What makes a Labubu a bag charm?
The versions seen most often on social media are generally plush pendants. They are small Labubu figures with a hanging loop, clasp or key ring, allowing the owner to attach one to a handbag, backpack, suitcase handle or belt loop.
One important example is POP MART’s Big into Energy Series–Vinyl Plush Pendant Blind Box, released on April 25, 2025. The listed figure is approximately 17 centimetres—about 6.69 inches—tall, excluding the hanging loop. Its listed materials include PVC, polyester stuffing and iron wire, and the product carries a warning that it is not suitable for people under 15.
The pendant format changed the role of the collectible. A figure kept on a shelf is primarily a private object for a collector. A Labubu attached to a designer handbag or everyday backpack becomes a public fashion statement. The charm can signal fandom, taste, participation in a trend—or simply a preference for an unusual accessory.
Labubu also arrived as decorative bag charms were returning to fashion and street style. The trend gave the character a natural setting, while the character’s distinctive face made it far more visible than an anonymous keychain.

What is a Labubu blind box?
A blind box is sealed packaging that does not reveal which design is inside. The buyer chooses a series, but not the exact character in an individual box.

A typical series contains several standard designs and may include one or more rarer secret, hidden or chase versions. POP MART says that customers cannot request a specific character from an individual blind box, and buying one does not guarantee a secret edition.
That system creates two kinds of appeal. Opening the box provides a small surprise, while collecting the entire series encourages repeat purchases, online trades and searches for missing designs. It also creates the main frustration: buying multiple boxes can produce duplicates.
A complete set can reduce the chance of receiving ordinary duplicates, but it does not necessarily guarantee a secret. In POP MART’s explanation of set purchases, a secret figure may replace one standard figure at random rather than being added to the set.

Prices depend on the series, size, materials, country and whether the item is an ordinary blind box or a limited release. Examples listed in POP MART’s U.S. catalog include:
| Example | Listed U.S. price |
|---|---|
| Big into Energy vinyl plush pendant blind box | $27.99 |
| The Monsters Pin for Love vinyl plush pendant blind box | $22.99 |
| The Monsters Fall in Wild plush doll pendant | $39.99 |
| Rock the Universe vinyl plush doll | $114.99 |
| MEGA Labubu 400% Tenth Anniversary | $314.90 |
| MEGA Labubu 1000% Tenth Anniversary | $1,269.90 |
These are official U.S. list-price examples, not a permanent price guide. New releases, promotions and availability can change the figures. A reseller’s price may be much higher—and that higher price does not automatically mean the item is rare or genuine.
Why did Labubu become so popular?
- The design is instantly recognizable. The pointed ears, exaggerated eyes and toothy smile make Labubu identifiable even in a crowded photograph.
- It occupies the “cute but creepy” space. Labubu is soft and collectible without looking traditionally sweet or conventional.
- Blind boxes reward collecting. Randomized designs create suspense and give owners reasons to trade, compare and keep searching.
- The product is wearable. A plush pendant puts the character on display rather than limiting it to a shelf or display cabinet.
- Social media amplified the accessory. Images and videos of Labubus attached to handbags helped the character travel across countries and communities.
- Scarcity encouraged resale activity. Sold-out releases and rare editions produced secondary-market demand, although that demand also made the market harder to navigate.
The international peak arrived in 2025, when Labubu became closely associated with the renewed bag-charm trend. Celebrity and fashion exposure helped, but the product’s design and the blind-box model had already supplied the mechanism for rapid sharing. POP MART’s 2025 interim report identified the Big into Energy series as a major driver of Labubu’s global growth.
Are all Labubus rare?
No. Labubu’s popularity has made the character seem synonymous with rarity, but most individual products are not automatically rare or valuable.
Rarity may come from a secret or chase designation, a limited edition, a collaboration, a short production run, a discontinued series or demand that substantially exceeds supply. A regular design from a widely released blind-box series can remain relatively ordinary on the resale market.
Condition, original packaging, authenticity and current demand all affect resale value. A listing for hundreds or thousands of dollars might represent a secret figure, a limited collaboration, a large MEGA figure, a discontinued product or an inflated price on a standard item. The number in the listing is not proof of rarity.

How to check whether a Labubu is authentic
Counterfeits have become a significant problem because the genuine products are fashionable, collectible and sometimes difficult to find at retail. The safest options are POP MART’s official website, official stores, ROBOSHOP vending machines and authorized sales platforms.
For products carrying an anti-counterfeiting code, POP MART’s stated verification process is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Scratch the coating on the box-label code to reveal the verification code.
- Visit
https://m-gss.popmart.com/us#/. - Open the QR Verify section.
- Enter the code and select Verify.
The result may say that the product appears genuine on its first scan, that a genuine product has been scanned multiple times, or that the scan limit has been exceeded. A scan-limit warning does not by itself prove that an item is counterfeit, because a genuine code may have been checked by previous owners or sellers. It is, however, a reason to be cautious—especially when buying from a reseller.
Unusually low prices, unofficial websites, altered packaging, suspicious seller names and codes that have been scanned repeatedly are all warning signs. A code check should be considered alongside the seller, packaging, price and purchase history rather than treated as the only test.
Common problems for buyers
Popular releases sell out
High-demand products can disappear quickly after restocking. On an official product page, POP MART may offer a NOTIFY ME WHEN AVAILABLE option. Using that alert is safer than relying on an unverified seller promising stock.
Blind boxes can contain duplicates
Buying individual boxes does not ensure a different design each time. POP MART generally does not treat duplicates from non-whole-set purchases as a product defect.
You usually cannot return an unwanted design
Opening a blind box and disliking the design received is not normally a reason for a return. The randomness is part of the product format. Buyers should check the applicable returns policy before opening a purchase.
Small variations are not always defects
Minor differences in paint, color intensity, fabric texture, loose threads or assembly can occur. More serious problems—such as significant stains, broken parts or a figure that cannot stand as intended—are different from ordinary manufacturing tolerances and may qualify for a replacement or other remedy under the seller’s policy.

Many Labubu listings carry a warning that the product is not suitable for persons under 15. That warning matters even when the item looks like a soft toy. Plush pendants may include small parts, metal hardware, plastic components and collectible-style construction intended for older users.

Parents should follow the age warning on the specific product rather than assuming that a plush appearance makes it suitable for a young child. A bag charm can also detach from its hardware, creating additional small-part concerns.

Labubu’s rise is not simply a story about a funny-looking toy. It shows how character design, collectible economics and fashion can reinforce one another. Kasing Lung supplied a recognizable fantasy character; POP MART supplied repeated series and blind-box distribution; social media supplied an audience; and the bag-charm trend supplied a way for owners to display the result in public.
That combination explains why Labubu moved beyond specialist designer-toy collectors. The product can be purchased as a surprise, traded as a collectible, worn as an accessory or displayed as a piece of pop culture. The same character therefore works as merchandise, fashion decoration and a small-scale speculative object—though only some releases become genuinely scarce or valuable.
FAQ
Is Labubu a rabbit or a monster?
Labubu is officially a monster character from Kasing Lung’s The Monsters universe. Its long rabbit-like ears are why people often call it a rabbit or rabbit doll.
What is the Labubu bag charm called?
The viral versions are usually sold as plush pendants or vinyl plush pendants. They include a hanging loop, clasp or key ring for attaching the character to a bag, backpack or luggage.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does every Labubu blind box contain a rare figure?
No. A blind box contains a randomly selected design from a series. Secret or chase figures may be included at varying odds, but buying one box does not guarantee a rare edition.
How can I verify a Labubu?
Scratch the anti-counterfeiting code on the box, visit https://m-gss.popmart.com/us#/, choose QR Verify, enter the code and select Verify. Treat repeated scans or a scan-limit warning as a reason for caution, and consider the seller and packaging as well.
The Bottom Line
Labubu is a monster character, not one specific doll and not officially a rabbit. POP MART’s blind-box figures and plush pendants made the character collectible, while the pendant format turned it into a highly visible bag charm. The appeal comes from its distinctive cute-but-creepy design, randomized releases, social-media exposure and fashionability—but a high resale price does not automatically mean a Labubu is rare or authentic.
