The Jesse Stone films are a series of nine television mysteries starring Tom Selleck as a troubled former Los Angeles homicide detective who becomes police chief of the small Massachusetts town of Paradise. The release order is nearly the same as the story order, with one important exception: Jesse Stone: Night Passage was released second but serves as the character’s origin story.
For a first viewing, release order works well. If you want to follow Jesse’s arrival in Paradise from the beginning, watch Night Passage first and then continue with the rest of the films.

These are television movies rather than theatrical releases. Most originally aired on CBS, while later entries were broadcast through Hallmark Movies & Mysteries after CBS stopped commissioning new installments.
1. Jesse Stone: Stone Cold (2005)
Stone Cold introduces Jesse Stone as the newly appointed police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts. He has left Los Angeles after his drinking damaged his career and arrives in town to investigate a series of murders connected to a violent local gang.
#1 Best Overall
- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Although it was the first film made, it is not Jesse’s first day in Paradise. He already holds the chief’s job when the story begins, which is why Night Passage should come first for viewers following the chronology strictly.
2. Jesse Stone: Night Passage (2006)
Night Passage is the prequel. It shows Jesse accepting the Paradise police chief position, moving to Massachusetts, and becoming involved in his first major case there. The film also establishes his uneasy relationship with town officials and the people who work under him.
Because it explains how Jesse got to Paradise, this is the natural starting point for a chronological watch. It was nevertheless released after Stone Cold, so viewers following broadcast order will encounter it second.
3. Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise (2006)
In Death in Paradise, Jesse investigates the murder of a teenage girl whose body is found in a lake. The case exposes the town’s hidden relationships and gives the series a more personal, character-focused mystery than its first film.
The film also develops Jesse’s working relationships with deputy Luther “Suitcase” Simpson and secretary Rose Gammon, both of whom become important recurring figures.

4. Jesse Stone: Sea Change (2007)
Sea Change follows Jesse as he reopens an old missing-person investigation involving a young woman who disappeared from Paradise years earlier. At the same time, his professional position becomes increasingly unstable.
The story is notable for showing how Jesse’s persistence can put him at odds with town leadership, even when his instincts as an investigator are sound.
5. Jesse Stone: Thin Ice (2009)
In Thin Ice, Jesse looks into a shooting involving a fellow police officer. The investigation becomes complicated by conflicting accounts, departmental pressure, and questions about whether the official version of events can be trusted.

His personal problems and drinking remain part of the story without replacing the central mystery.
6. Jesse Stone: No Remorse (2010)
No Remorse begins with Jesse suspended from his position as police chief. Unable to act officially, he investigates a series of murders while also dealing with the consequences of his increasingly strained relationship with Paradise’s authorities.

The film works as both a crime story and a turning point for Jesse. His separation from the department changes the way he interacts with the town and with the people who continue to seek his help.
7. Jesse Stone: Innocents Lost (2011)
In Innocents Lost, Jesse investigates the death of a young woman whose apparent suicide does not convince him. The case leads him into a world of exploitation and vulnerable people, while his former colleagues face changes of their own.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBy this stage, the films assume familiarity with Jesse’s history, his recovery efforts, and his complicated position in Paradise. Watching the earlier entries first makes the emotional consequences of the investigation clearer.
8. Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt (2012)
Benefit of the Doubt starts with an explosion that kills two Paradise police officers. Jesse, who is no longer serving as chief, becomes a suspect in the attack and must investigate while trying to clear his name.
The film combines a police-institution mystery with the question of whether Jesse can regain the trust he has lost. It also continues storylines involving the department and the town’s leadership.
Rank #4
9. Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise (2015)
Lost in Paradise is the ninth and most recent released Jesse Stone television movie. Jesse travels to Boston to help investigate a series of murders involving young women, while his own unresolved issues continue to affect his work.

The film broadens the setting beyond Paradise but keeps the same deliberate pace, restrained performances, and character-driven investigation associated with the series. It is the final released entry, not a separate prequel or spin-off.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which order is best for a first-time viewer?
Release order is the safest choice:
Stone Cold → Night Passage → Death in Paradise → Sea Change → Thin Ice → No Remorse → Innocents Lost → Benefit of the Doubt → Lost in Paradise
This is the order in which viewers originally met Jesse Stone and the supporting cast. It also preserves the way the films gradually reveal Jesse’s past and his changing relationship with Paradise.

Best Value
- Police chief Jesse Stone takes some well-deserved vacation time in Boston, where the Assistant State Homicide Commander has sought his expertise in evaluating a packet of cold case murders. Jesse?s intuition leads him to a case that has already been closed, but something catches his eye, which sets him off on an investigation filled with surprises, unlikely suspects and grave danger.
Choose chronological order if you prefer Jesse’s personal story to begin with his move from Los Angeles to Massachusetts. Starting with Night Passage makes his position in Stone Cold easier to understand, but it does not radically change the viewing experience.
Are there more Jesse Stone movies?
There are nine released Jesse Stone films. A tenth movie has been discussed for years, with Tom Selleck repeatedly expressing interest in continuing the character, but a project being discussed is not the same as a released film. For a completed watchlist, Lost in Paradise remains the ninth entry.
The films are loosely based on Robert B. Parker’s Jesse Stone novels. The screen adaptations do not always follow the books in publication order, and the television series developed its own continuity around Selleck’s version of the character.
