Twitch Channel Points are free, channel-specific points viewers earn through activity such as watching a stream, following, and participating in raids, then redeem for perks that the streamer chooses. They are not cash, Bits, or a balance shared across Twitch. Eligible creators can manage them in the Creator Dashboard, set up rewards, and decide how redemptions are handled.
What are Twitch Channel Points?
Channel Points are Twitch’s built-in rewards program for a particular channel. Viewers earn points in that channel and spend them on rewards the streamer has enabled or created. A balance in one channel does not transfer to another.
They are not “Twitch money.” Channel Points have no stated cash value in Twitch’s Channel Points guide, and they are different from Bits, subscriptions, and paid Custom Power-ups. They are intended to encourage viewing and participation, not replace paid support.

Some default rewards are handled largely by Twitch; a custom reward is usually a request for the streamer or a moderator to fulfill. For example, highlighting a chat message differs from promising to play a particular sound or change an OBS scene, which generally requires an integration or manual action.
How viewers earn Channel Points
Twitch identifies activities such as watching a live stream, following a channel, and participating in a raid as ways to earn points. Twitch may also offer other account- or program-specific engagement opportunities. Some viewer experiences may include streak-related bonuses. Exact earning rates and mechanics can change, so check Twitch’s current viewer guide rather than relying on an old points table.
Viewers should be signed in and participating in the channel experience for activity to count. Points are earned and spent separately in each channel.
How viewers redeem points
- Open a live channel that has Channel Points enabled.
- Look for the Channel Points or rewards button near the chat box.
- Open the rewards list and select a reward you can afford.
- Complete any prompt, such as entering a game username, then confirm the redemption.
- Watch the stream or chat for the streamer’s response or fulfillment.
A custom reward does not necessarily happen automatically: it may enter the streamer’s queue for review. Twitch’s Custom Power-ups guide describes a separate feature that uses Bits. Custom Power-ups are not Channel Point redemptions.

Who can set up Channel Points?
Twitch’s creator guide describes Channel Points as available to monetized streamers. Twitch also announced on May 13, 2026 that access to Channel Points and several other creator tools was expanding globally to eligible streamers. That does not mean every account automatically has the feature, nor does access to a tool by itself establish eligibility for payouts. Twitch says Partner or Affiliate status remains necessary for payouts.
Check the Creator Dashboard for your account’s current access and any onboarding notices. Availability of Channel Points, payout eligibility, and access to other monetization features are separate questions.
How to set up Channel Points as a streamer
- Sign in to Twitch and open the Creator Dashboard.
- Open the navigation menu and go to Viewer Rewards.
- Select Channel Points or, if your dashboard uses the broader label, Power-ups & Channel Points.
- Turn on Enable Channel Points. Save or confirm if Twitch presents that option.
- Rename the points and upload a custom icon if you want to brand the program. Twitch says the icon appears near the chat area on the channel page, though display can differ by interface.
- Review the default rewards and choose which to enable or customize.
- To add your own reward, select Manage Rewards, then Add New Custom Reward.
- Set a clear title, cost, description, and any viewer prompt. Add an icon or background color if desired.
- Set a cooldown or redemption limits where appropriate, save the reward, and test that it appears to viewers.
Dashboard wording can change. If the menu is missing, use the web Creator Dashboard rather than relying on the mobile app, check the broader Viewer Rewards area and account onboarding, and sign out and back in. A chatbot’s loyalty points do not create or enable Twitch Channel Points.

Default rewards and custom rewards
Default rewards are provided by Twitch and can be enabled, disabled, and—in supported cases—customized. Examples include choosing an emote to unlock and highlighting a message in chat. Depending on the reward, settings may include a name or description, cost, icon, and icon background color. Twitch recommends costs for default rewards and offers Smart Costs for certain defaults, which can adjust costs based on audience size and redemption rate. Smart Costs should not be assumed to apply to every custom reward.

The title and description should state exactly what the viewer receives and what the streamer must do. “Choose the next non-ranked game, once per stream” is easier to understand and fulfill than “Make me do something funny.”
Twitch currently documents a limit of 50 rewards per channel. Its creator guide documents custom reward cooldowns from 1 minute to 7 days, plus options to cap redemptions per stream and per user for eligible rewards redeemable while live. A viewer text prompt appears in chat; Twitch advises not to request or provide personal information in prompts. These are current documented limits and may change.

For developers, Twitch’s API documentation supports creating and managing custom rewards. It documents a minimum cost of 1 point, a maximum title length of 45 characters, and a 50-reward maximum; API use requires an authorized user access token with the channel:manage:redemptions scope.
Design rewards you can actually fulfill
A useful reward is easy to understand, safe, bounded, and manageable when several people redeem it. Price low-effort actions modestly; reserve higher costs for rewards that take more time or are especially valuable to your community. A practical menu might include a few low-cost conversational rewards, some medium-effort choices, and one or two occasional event rewards.
- Low effort: a shoutout, a question, or choosing between two harmless options.
- Medium effort: choosing the next non-ranked game, requesting a song from an approved list, or joining a community game lobby.
- Higher effort: selecting a longer challenge or temporarily changing the stream’s mode.
- Automation-friendly: a sound or on-screen animation, provided you have tested the integration that triggers it.
Manual rewards are quick to start but create queue work and may interrupt gameplay. Automation can handle repetitive sounds or visual effects, but it takes setup, permissions, testing, and maintenance. Start with a small number of manual rewards and automate only the popular, repeatable ones.

Do not offer rewards that require sensitive personal information, promise financial benefits or guaranteed follows, encourage dangerous conduct, or depend on purchases you cannot reliably provide. Make clear whether a reward is available only while live and what happens if you are in a match, offline, or otherwise unable to fulfill it.
Manage redemptions, rejects, and pauses
Custom redemptions appear in the Activity Feed and rewards queue. The streamer or an authorized moderator can review the request, fulfill it, and choose Mark as Complete. If a request cannot be fulfilled or breaks channel rules, choose Reject; Twitch’s guide says the points are returned to the viewer. Rejecting an impossible request is better than leaving it unresolved.
Documented ways to open the queue include clicking the Channel Points reward balloon in chat, typing /requests in desktop or web chat, or opening the queue from chat settings under tasks. Moderators can help mark rewards complete, reject or refund rewards, report abusive rewards, and pause redemptions. Menu and command behavior may differ by interface.
Use Pause redemptions when the queue becomes too large, you need a break, or a reward is temporarily impractical. For a reward being redeemed too often, raise its cost, add a cooldown, set per-stream or per-user caps, or retire it.
Channel Points versus third-party loyalty points
Twitch Channel Points are native to Twitch and appear in Twitch’s rewards interface. A service such as StreamElements Loyalty can provide its own points, chat commands, store, and redemptions, but that balance is separate. It does not become a viewer’s Twitch Channel Point balance.
A third-party system may suit a creator who needs a broader store or extra chat-driven automation. It is not required to enable Channel Points. If you run both, name and explain the currencies clearly so viewers know where points are earned and what each can buy.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Channel Points are missing from the dashboard: Check eligibility and creator onboarding, use the web dashboard, and look under both Viewer Rewards and Power-ups & Channel Points. Sign out and back in or try a private browser window. If the feature should be available but remains absent, contact Twitch support.
- Viewers cannot see a reward: Confirm Channel Points are enabled, the reward is active, and the viewer is on the correct channel. Check whether redemptions are paused or any limits have been reached.
- A redemption appeared but nothing happened: Check the Activity Feed and rewards queue. A custom reward is usually a request, not an automatic action. For an automated action, verify the integration is connected to the correct channel and has the permissions it needs.
- The queue is unmanageable: Pause redemptions, then adjust cost, cooldown, per-stream cap, or per-user cap before reopening them.
- A prompt contains private information: Do not request personal details. Twitch warns that prompt responses appear in chat; viewers should avoid sharing addresses, phone numbers, passwords, or identifying account data.
- You cannot fulfill a redemption: Reject it so the points are returned, and clarify the reward’s availability and limits in its description.
