What did Anthony Russo say about the robot designs?
In an interview published by Netflix Tudum, Russo described the design direction he gave production designer Dennis Gassner and his team: “When working with [production designer] Dennis Gassner and his team, the directive we gave was that these robots should feel familiar, almost like something you might have seen in an old commercial or a local mall.” (Netflix Tudum)
The reference is to ordinary, recognizable consumer imagery rather than an unfamiliar future. Russo’s wording suggests a deliberate contrast: the robots belong to a science-fiction setting, but their look was intended to evoke things a viewer might already remember from everyday life. That is his stated creative intention; how successfully any particular design evokes nostalgia is a matter of interpretation.
How does the film frame Keats and Herman?
Russo also described Keats and Herman as “an odd couple — one’s a human being, the other is a robot.” (Netflix Tudum) The contrast is central to the pair’s premise: their relationship brings a human character and a robot together as companions, rather than treating the robot solely as a piece of machinery.

What is The Electric State based on?
Netflix identifies the film as based on Simon Stålenhag’s illustrated work The Electric State. Its official synopsis follows a young woman traveling across the American West on a dangerous journey with a mysterious toy robot and a smuggler. (Netflix Tudum)
For readers who want to explore the story’s source, Simon Stålenhag’s illustrated book behind the film is the direct starting point. The book and the film are distinct forms: Russo’s comments address the screen adaptation’s design direction, not a claim that every film image reproduces the illustrations.
