Westland Books’ publishing operation continued under Pratilipi after Amazon ended its ownership in 2022, but that is not quite the same as Amazon selling the old company. A contemporary Scroll report said Westland had not been bought as a company; it described Pratilipi as starting a new publishing venture with much of Westland’s former team. A later Moneycontrol account called the move an acquisition and said the team and operations were integrated into Pratilipi. The distinction is between the old corporate entity and continuity of its publishing work.
What happened to Westland Books?
Amazon announced Westland’s closure on 1 February 2022. According to Scroll’s report of 1 April 2022, Westland ceased to exist as an Amazon company on 31 March. Pratilipi then established a publishing venture intended to carry on much of Westland’s programme with many of its former staff.
Moneycontrol later described Pratilipi’s move as an acquisition of Westland from Amazon and said the publisher’s team and operations were brought into Pratilipi in April 2022. Read together, the accounts support continuity of the publishing operation under Pratilipi, not a simple sale of the former company as a going concern.
| Date | What the reports say |
|---|---|
| 1 February 2022 | Scroll reported that Amazon announced Westland’s closure. |
| 31 March 2022 | Scroll reported that Westland ceased to exist as an Amazon company. |
| 1 April 2022 | Scroll reported that Pratilipi was establishing a new publishing venture, with much of Westland’s team and programme expected to continue. |
| April 2022 | Moneycontrol later described Pratilipi as bringing Westland’s team and operations into its fold. |
Did Westland’s former team continue?
Scroll named former Westland CEO Gautam Padmanabhan and former publisher Karthika VK among the people joining or building the new venture, along with other former publishing staff. Its report described a substantial continuation of the team, not a transfer of every employee.

The continuation of staff also did not mean that every book, author relationship or imprint automatically carried over. Scroll reported that retaining imprints depended on negotiations and that authors could choose whether to continue with the new venture. Some backlist books might not be republished there.

The announcement documents a plan; it does not establish how many books have since been completed or published.
Print as one path among several
In a company letter dated 30 September 2026, Team Pratilipi described stories moving across languages and formats, including translation, audio, comics, print, film, television and micro-drama. This is the company’s stated ecosystem ambition, not a promise that any particular story will be adapted or published in each format.

- The comics announcement does not confirm final selections, completion, or publication of all 24 planned books.
- The current store and company profile show present-day publishing activity, but do not prove that every former Westland title, author agreement or imprint continued.
