If you are looking for websites like 123Movies, the safest replacements are JustWatch for finding a specific title, Tubi for free on-demand viewing, and Pluto TV for free live channels and on-demand programming. A Roku or Fire TV streaming stick can help if your television lacks compatible apps.
If you are looking for websites like 123Movies, the safest replacement depends on what you actually want: JustWatch for finding a specific movie or show, Tubi for free on-demand viewing, and Pluto TV for free live channels plus on-demand programming. If your television lacks the necessary apps, a Roku or Fire TV streaming stick can provide access to compatible legal services.
Do not assume that a current website using the name “123Movies,” “123Movieshub,” “GoMovies,” or a similar variation is the original service, an authorized platform, or safe simply because the page loads. The historically documented 123Movies network was associated with unauthorized streaming, and a 2018 U.S. Trade Representative report described the apparent shuttering of services operating under names including 123movies.to and Gomovies.to.
What happened to 123Movies?
123Movies was not a conventional licensed streaming service like Netflix or a free, ad-supported platform such as Tubi. It was a network of websites associated with unauthorized copies of movies and television programs. In 2018, the U.S. Trade Representative reported the apparent shutdown of services operating under the 123Movies and GoMovies names after a criminal investigation in Vietnam and engagement from the motion-picture industry.

That report documents the enforcement-era development; it does not establish that every later domain using a similar name disappeared. Nor does a later clone automatically inherit the original service’s identity or prove that it has permission to distribute the videos it offers. A familiar logo, working video player, or long list of titles is not evidence of licensing.
For that reason, this guide does not list alleged current mirrors or “working” 123Movies domains. Instead, it focuses on replacing the useful part of the experience: searching for and watching movies and television online.

1. JustWatch: the best overall replacement for searching
JustWatch is the closest legal replacement for the discovery function many people wanted from 123Movies. It is a streaming guide rather than a single website that necessarily hosts or plays every title. Search for a film or series, select your country, and compare where it is currently available.
Depending on the title and region, JustWatch can identify legal offers through:

Important limitation: JustWatch does not guarantee that it plays the title itself. Its results depend on country, provider agreements, rights changes, and the date you search. Treat the listing as a starting point and verify the offer on the provider’s own service before paying for a subscription, rental, or purchase.
2. Tubi: the best free on-demand option
Tubi is a strong choice if your main requirement is watching movies and television without paying for a monthly subscription. Its official service presents a free catalog of movies, series, and original programming, typically supported by advertising.
Tubi is more suitable than a live-channel service when you want to choose a title and start it on demand. Search its current catalog for the movie, documentary, or series you want rather than assuming that a title mentioned in an older article is still available.
Recommended Free Tools
Catalogs change. A title may be added, removed, restricted to certain countries, or become unavailable on a particular device. Tubi is therefore best described as one legal free option—not as a permanent home for any specific film.
3. Pluto TV: the best free live-TV alternative
Pluto TV combines free live channels with an on-demand selection of movies and shows. Its channel-based design is useful if you enjoy browsing and discovering something to watch without choosing a specific title first.

Pluto TV’s official pages describe hundreds of free live channels and thousands of on-demand movies and shows, although the exact lineup can vary by market, device, and date. The live channels behave more like scheduled television: you generally join whatever is currently playing rather than starting every program from its beginning.
Choose Pluto TV when casual channel surfing matters. Choose Tubi—or use JustWatch to compare other services—when you want more control over a particular title.
Which alternative should you choose?
- You need a specific movie or show: Start with JustWatch. Compare free, subscription, rental, and purchase options, then confirm the current offer with the provider.
- You want free, on-demand viewing: Search Tubi first. Expect advertising and a changing catalog.
- You prefer live channels: Try Pluto TV. It is designed for channel browsing as well as on-demand viewing.
- You mainly watch documentaries: Search the documentary title in JustWatch first, then check Tubi and Pluto TV. Availability varies substantially by country and rights holder.
- You use an older television: Add a compatible streaming device, provided your television has the required connection and your home has a suitable internet connection.
How to find a movie legally, step by step
- Write down the exact title. Include the release year if several films share the same name.
- Search JustWatch in your country. Select the correct film or series rather than relying on a generic search result.
- Compare the offer types. Look for free or ad-supported options before considering a rental, purchase, or new subscription.
- Check the provider’s current listing. Rights and pricing can change after a guide updates its information.
- Check the device requirements. Confirm that the service has an app for your television, streaming player, phone, tablet, or web browser.
- Use the official app or website. Avoid pages that redirect repeatedly, request an unusual browser extension, or claim that a familiar brand name makes an unauthorized copy legitimate.
Watching legal streaming services on an older TV
If your television is not a smart TV—or its built-in apps are too old to support current services—a streaming device can be a practical upgrade. These devices connect to the television and use your internet connection to run compatible streaming applications. They do not unlock 123Movies, bypass copyright restrictions, or guarantee access to a particular service.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K
The Roku Streaming Stick 4K connects directly to a compatible television and can stream movies and television shows over the internet. It is a sensible option for readers who want a simple interface for legal free, rental, subscription, or ad-supported apps. Check the television’s available HDMI connection, power requirements, Wi-Fi coverage, and current app compatibility before buying.
Amazon Fire TV Stick HD
The Amazon Fire TV Stick HD is another mainstream streaming player for accessing compatible legal movie and television applications. It can suit viewers who already use the Fire TV interface or want a basic streaming stick for a non-smart TV. As with any device, confirm current service support and television compatibility rather than assuming every app is available on every model.
Why current 123Movies-style domains are a poor substitute
A domain that uses “123Movies” or “GoMovies” may be unrelated to the historically documented network. There is no reliable basis for treating every similarly named site as an official continuation, and a site’s availability does not demonstrate that it has authorization to distribute its catalog.

The careful warning is not that every unofficial site will infect every visitor or that every visitor will face legal consequences. The more defensible point is that clone domains are not verified legal services merely because they use a well-known name. They may also expose visitors to aggressive advertising, deceptive redirects, intrusive prompts, or requests for unnecessary software and personal information. Using services that clearly identify their providers, offers, and licensing model avoids that uncertainty.

Free does not always mean on demand
Tubi is primarily useful for selecting a title from a free on-demand catalog. Pluto TV is better understood as a combination of scheduled live channels and on-demand programming. Both may be free while using advertising to support the service.
A title’s availability is temporary and regional
A film available in the United States may be absent in another country. A title can also move between subscription, ad-supported, rental, and purchase options. Search results should be treated as time- and geography-sensitive, especially before starting a new subscription.
A streaming guide is not the same as a streaming host
JustWatch helps identify where a title can be watched. It does not mean that JustWatch itself owns the movie or provides every stream. The provider shown in the result is the service whose terms, app, price, and availability you should check.

Bottom line
123Movies was associated with unauthorized movie and television streaming, and the major service documented under that name was apparently shuttered during a 2018 enforcement period. Current sites using similar names should not be assumed to be official or safe. For legal alternatives, use JustWatch to locate a specific title, browse Tubi for free on-demand viewing, try Pluto TV for free live channels, and use a Roku or Fire TV streaming stick if your television needs compatible streaming apps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 123Movies still a legitimate streaming service?
No. The historically documented 123Movies network was associated with unauthorized streaming, and similarly named current domains should not be assumed to be official, licensed, or safe.
What is the best legal alternative to 123Movies?
Start with JustWatch, which compares legal subscription, free, ad-supported, rental, and purchase options. Then verify the current listing with the provider because availability changes by country and date.
Where can I watch movies online for free legally?
Tubi is a strong free on-demand option, while Pluto TV combines free live channels with an on-demand catalog. Both are generally ad-supported, and their catalogs vary by market and time.
Does JustWatch stream movies itself?
JustWatch is a discovery guide, not necessarily the service that plays every title. It directs you to the provider offering the movie or show and may show subscription, free, rental, or purchase choices.
The Bottom Line
The practical answer: use JustWatch to find where a particular movie or show is legally available; use Tubi for free on-demand viewing; use Pluto TV for free live channels and on-demand browsing. Avoid 123Movies-style clones, and add a Roku Streaming Stick 4K or Amazon Fire TV Stick HD only to access compatible legal apps on an older television.
