Their spouses and children form the next branches. Addy is also known as Adolph and later Eddy; he is the grandfather of novelist Georgia Hunter, whose family history inspired We Were the Lucky Ones.

How the family tree relates to the story
The five siblings’ wartime paths separate across countries, as they and their relatives struggle to survive and reunite. The family relationships help orient the reader, but the narrative follows people whose circumstances and locations change over time. For a fuller account of the family’s story, see the novel by Georgia Hunter, which the television miniseries adapts.
How closely is the story based on real events?
Hunter has described the novel as based on her family’s Holocaust survival story. She assembled a timeline of the siblings, their partners, and their parents using oral histories, primary sources, letters, and archival research. In a publisher interview, she said the major movements, incarcerations, escapes, and brushes with death in the narrative happened, while also explaining that she used creative license where evidence left gaps and an event was feasible.

That documentary foundation does not make the book a transcript or a complete genealogical record. Hunter has said she imagined what relatives might have thought and felt when the sources could not preserve their inner experiences. The publisher’s reader guide identifies the book as historical fiction. Interviews with relatives and acquaintances, translated letters and documents, archive and museum research, and first-hand accounts in the USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive informed Hunter’s work.
What to know about the television adaptation
The miniseries adapts Hunter’s novel. Showrunner Erica Lipez described it as a story spanning nine years, twelve characters, and four continents, with the family’s separation shaping its structure. Hunter participated in the adaptation process and shared her research with the production team.
