In a January 6, 2025, interview ahead of the next day’s Season 3 premiere, Ramón Rodríguez said Will Trent would face “some pretty intense events” with effects that could last “possibly forever.” He did not reveal what those events were. His preview instead set up a season about Will’s return from rural Tennessee, a case connected to his past, and the unsettled relationships waiting for him in Atlanta.
What Rodríguez said the Season 3 story would explore
Season 2 ended with Will disappearing. Rodríguez told TV Insider that Season 3 begins with Will in rural Tennessee with Betty, trying to start over and questioning whether continuing his career with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is right for him. A case involving someone from his past draws him back.
Rodríguez described a shift in emphasis from the previous season: “Where last season we felt Will was really haunted and exploring things from his past and his childhood, I think this one is a lot about where he’s at now and what’s happening.” The past still matters, but the preview framed Will’s present choices and circumstances as the season’s focus.
Why Will’s return complicates his relationships
Faith
Will left without telling Faith, leaving their relationship badly strained by the time he returns. Rodríguez’s preview made the silence surrounding Will’s disappearance part of the emotional fallout, not just a gap in the case-of-the-week plot.

Angie
Will and Angie face a more complicated rupture. He turned her in over her role in covering up Crystal’s killing of her abuser, and Rodríguez said their eventual face-to-face scenes would be difficult: both characters have reasons to be upset. Angie is also no longer working for the Atlanta Police Department.
The interview left open the question of whether Will and Angie have a future together. Rodríguez put it this way: “I think for audiences that have been watching, they’ll be really excited to see what does happen with Will: How is he coming back? Where was he? How did he change? And what’s his potential future with or without Angie? What does that look like?”

New and returning figures in Will’s orbit
Rodríguez discussed two characters relevant to Will’s changing circumstances:
- Marian Alba, played by Gina Rodriguez, is a new assistant district attorney in Season 3.
- Raphael is a figure from Will’s past who is involved in criminal activity. Will feels indebted to him because of their childhood connection.
The preview positioned Raphael as a link between Will’s earlier life and the case that brings him back, while Marian Alba enters the present-day world Will must navigate.

What the “intense events” teaser does—and does not—reveal
Rodríguez’s exact warning was: “And we also have some pretty intense events that end up really affecting Will — and possibly forever,” The interview does not identify those events, so the line is a teaser rather than a plot explanation. It supports the expectation that Will will face major consequences; it does not establish what happens or how permanently his life changes.
