Wayward is an eight-episode Canadian Netflix mystery-thriller about two Toronto teenagers transferred to a supposedly therapeutic academy in the fictional town of Tall Pines. Set in 2003, Mae Martin’s limited series examines how coercion can be disguised as care, and how the need to belong can help an entire community protect an abusive system.

What is Wayward about?

Wayward is an eight-episode Canadian Netflix mystery-thriller limited series created by Mae Martin. Set largely in the fictional town of Tall Pines in 2003, it follows Toronto teenagers Abbie and Leila after they are transferred to Tall Pines Academy, an institution supposedly designed to help troubled adolescents. Their attempt to understand—and potentially escape—the academy’s coercive world intersects with the arrival of local police officer Alex Dempsey and his pregnant wife, Laura Redman.

The academy is not simply a sinister backdrop. It is the organizing force of the town, shaping its language, relationships, family structures, and idea of what counts as healing. As the story develops, Wayward turns its mystery toward a more unsettling question: how can control be made to look like care, and why do apparently ordinary people accept it?

This is a fictional TV-MA drama, not a documentary or a true-story adaptation. Martin drew on real experiences and research into troubled-teen institutions, self-help groups, and cult structures, but Tall Pines Academy and the events of the series are fictionalized.

The premise: a town built around an academy

Abbie and Leila begin as close friends from Toronto whose lives change when they are sent to Tall Pines Academy. From the outside, the school uses the familiar vocabulary of rehabilitation: personal growth, accountability, self-reflection, and treatment. Inside, that vocabulary becomes a mechanism for surveillance and submission.

Tall Pines initially looks like an idyllic small town, but the apparent calm is inseparable from the academy. Residents, staff, parents, and authority figures are connected to a social system that protects the institution. The series gradually reveals secret histories, psychological manipulation, and coercive practices rather than presenting one isolated villain operating outside the community.

Alex Dempsey becomes the audience’s entry point into that system. A newly arrived local police officer, Alex wants to be useful, accepted, and settled. His contact with Abbie and Leila gives him reason to investigate Tall Pines, but his judgment is weakened by his desire to belong. He is not a detached detective who sees the truth immediately; he is someone whose need for an ordinary family life makes the town’s version of normality attractive.

Laura Redman, Alex’s pregnant wife, complicates the investigation further. She has a prior connection to Tall Pines and secrets of her own. Intelligent, empathic, magnetic, and difficult to read, Laura is not merely an investigator’s spouse or an exposition device. Her history becomes central to the question of whether the town’s beliefs can be escaped simply by recognizing them.

The main characters

Alex Dempsey

Alex represents the adult who believes belonging will provide safety. He wants a conventional family structure and a clear social role, but that desire also makes him vulnerable to conformity. His police authority does not place him outside Tall Pines’ influence. Instead, the series uses his failures to show how institutions survive through ordinary compromises as much as through overt brutality.

Laura Redman

Laura arrives in Tall Pines with Alex, but she is not experiencing the town as a stranger. Her prior connection gives her a more complicated relationship to its people and practices. The character’s apparent empathy can be reassuring or suspicious depending on how much the viewer trusts the information being presented at a given moment.

Abbie and Leila

Abbie and Leila supply the emotional center of the series. Their friendship is the audience’s clearest view into the academy, and their different responses to fear, pressure, rebellion, and loyalty keep the teen storyline from becoming a simple escape narrative. The show treats their adolescence as a period of extreme intensity: friendship, humiliation, first love, and resistance can all feel like matters of survival.

Evelyn Wade

Played by Toni Collette, Evelyn is the founder and head of Tall Pines Academy. She combines maternal warmth, therapeutic language, charisma, and ruthless control. Her power comes not only from intimidation but from her ability to make domination sound compassionate. Evelyn is therefore more than the academy’s administrator: she is the central figure in Tall Pines’ psychological and social order.

What the series is really examining

When coercion is called care

The academy’s most important weapon is its definition of treatment. If resistance can be described as denial, pain can be described as progress, and obedience can be described as insight, then the institution can present abuse as a necessary part of recovery. Wayward is interested in the system that makes this possible: vulnerable teenagers, anxious parents, staff members, and a community that all have reasons to accept the institution’s language.

That is why the show’s central question is broader than whether Evelyn is evil. The more difficult issue is how people participate in a structure that promises to fix damaged children while removing those children’s ability to define their own experience.

Belonging and conformity

Alex’s storyline connects institutional power to a more ordinary human need. He wants to fit into a community, become a dependable husband and father, and live inside a recognizable version of adulthood. The danger is not that he has no moral instincts; it is that he repeatedly has incentives to ignore what those instincts are telling him.

The series also questions the assumption that a conventional family, a uniformed profession, or a respectable town is automatically healthy. Alex’s desire for a nuclear, heteronormative family life is part of his vulnerability rather than proof that he has achieved security.

Adolescence as metamorphosis

Martin and co-showrunner Ryan Scott have described the series as a story about the transformation from adolescence into adulthood. The show treats teenage experience as emotionally absolute, which helps explain its shifts between comedy, music-driven energy, menace, and horror. The tonal changes are not only stylistic decoration: they reflect how quickly adolescent freedom can become danger and how quickly exhilaration can become fear.

Unstable truth

Wayward repeatedly unsettles the boundary between factual events, induced memories, personal testimony, and ideological stories. A character’s account may be emotionally true without being a complete or objective record. Viewers should therefore distinguish between what the finale confirms, what a character claims, and what the show deliberately leaves open.

Is Wayward based on a true story?

No. Wayward is not a dramatization of one real academy, town, or case. Martin has explained that the series grew partly from a close friend’s experience at a troubled-teen institution and from Martin’s own interest in adolescence and the early 2000s. That real-world connection informed the subject matter, but it does not make the plot a true story.

Martin’s research also connected the fictional academy to the history of self-help groups and cults, including Synanon, a 1970s Los Angeles self-help cult that influenced parts of the troubled-teen industry. The series fictionalizes and intensifies those ideas. It should not be used as a factual account of Synanon or as evidence that every event depicted occurred at a real school.

The writers’ room consulted Martin’s friend, a writer who had attended one of these schools, and physician and author Gabor Maté. Those consultations help explain the show’s research process; they do not establish the fictional events as historical fact.

Creative influences and tone

Martin has identified Girl, Interrupted, Get Out, and Fargo as influences. They have also described the tonal idea as placing the teenagers from Booksmart into One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. That combination captures the series’ unusual balance: adolescent comedy and pop energy exist alongside institutional menace, cult dynamics, trauma, and psychological horror.

The result is not a conventional police mystery. The investigation gives the story forward motion, but the show is more interested in how reality is shaped by power than in delivering a neat sequence of clues. Viewers looking for a tightly explained procedural may find the shifts frustrating. Viewers comfortable with surreal imagery and competing interpretations are more likely to find the uncertainty purposeful.

Cast and production

Mae Martin plays Alex Dempsey and created the series, while Toni Collette plays Evelyn Wade and Sarah Gadon plays Laura Redman. Sydney Topliffe plays Abbie, Alyvia Alyn Lind plays Leila, and Brandon Jay McLaren is also part of the principal cast. Guest performers include Patrick J. Adams, Patrick Gallagher, Gage Munroe, Byron Mann, and Mark McKinney.

Martin and Ryan Scott served as showrunners. The listed directors are Euros Lyn, Renuka Jeyapalan, and John Fawcett. Executive producers include Martin, Scott, Jennifer Kawaja, Bruno Dubé, Ben Farrell, Hannah Mackay, and Lyn.

The series was produced by Montreal-based Sphere Media in partnership with UK-based Objective Fiction. Netflix reported that production took place in Ontario for more than 80 days and involved more than 2,400 Canadian crew members and 650 Canadian vendors. Netflix also reported more than CAD $50 million in gross value added to the Canadian economy. Those figures are Netflix-reported production-impact figures, not independently audited figures in the supplied research.

Sphere Media lists one season of eight approximately 60-minute episodes and lists English and French among the languages. Netflix classifies the series as a limited series and uses thriller and drama as its principal genre labels.

Reception: why the response is split

The supplied Rotten Tomatoes snapshot lists Wayward at 78% from 54 critic reviews and 46% from more than 500 audience ratings. Such figures can change as additional reviews and ratings are added, so they are best treated as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent verdict.

The split response makes sense. Positive reactions have emphasized Collette’s performance, the unsettling atmosphere, the mixture of comedy and horror, and the show’s engagement with the troubled-teen industry. More critical reactions have focused on the finale’s ambiguity, unresolved mysteries, tonal shifts, and the unevenness of the central investigation.

In practical terms, Wayward is a strong fit for viewers who enjoy morally unstable thrillers, institutional horror, and endings that invite interpretation. It is a less obvious fit for anyone expecting every strange event, accusation, and flashback to receive one literal explanation.

Where to watch Wayward and how many episodes it has

Netflix is the identified viewing service, and the first season contains eight episodes. All eight were released on September 25, 2025, rather than being rolled out weekly. The ending explained — spoilers

Stop here if you have not finished the series. The finale does not provide a conventional victory in which every secret is exposed and every character returns to an uncomplicated reality.

At the immediate plot level, the struggle surrounding Evelyn and Tall Pines Academy reaches a resolution. But the ending then presents Alex with a seemingly domestic future in which Laura has risen to power in Tall Pines and treats their newborn as belonging not only to the parents but to the wider community. Netflix’s ending explanation frames this tableau as a vision of the life Alex never wanted: a family absorbed into the town’s collective ideology.

The important word is seemingly. The final images are not presented as a stable, objective report that settles every question. The series has already established uncertainty around memory, testimony, induced experience, and competing realities. As a result, the audience is left to consider whether the ending is literal, psychological, symbolic, or deliberately impossible to separate into those categories.

The same caution applies to the Leap, the academy’s wider network, family secrets, and the series’ psychedelic toad imagery. The finale does not turn every one of those elements into a fully documented piece of lore. Some details remain open because Martin has chosen moral and psychological ambiguity over a black-and-white explanation.

That ambiguity does not mean nothing is resolved. The immediate power struggle changes, and the threat represented by Evelyn and the academy is confronted. What remains unresolved is the larger system: the beliefs that allowed Tall Pines to function, the extent to which its influence continues, and how much of the characters’ understanding has been shaped by that system.

One useful reading is that the ending turns Alex’s original wish against him. He wanted acceptance, family, and a stable place in the community. The final vision asks whether those wishes are still desirable once the community claims ownership over the family itself. Another reading treats the sequence as a warning that leaving an institution physically does not necessarily free someone from its narrative.

The show does not require viewers to choose one of these readings as the single official answer. Its point is partly to make the audience ask what they would accept in exchange for belonging—and what they would be willing to overlook if the people offering control used the language of healing.

How to approach Wayward

  • Watch it for: Toni Collette’s controlled, unsettling performance; the Abbie–Leila friendship; the academy’s coercive-care premise; and a surreal mystery that treats uncertainty as part of its subject.
  • Expect: a 2003 setting, TV-MA material, institutional manipulation, shifting tones, family secrets, and a finale that leaves some realities deliberately unstable.
  • Do not expect: a documentary, a direct account of Synanon or one real troubled-teen school, or a procedural ending that explains every flashback and supernatural-looking image.
  • Choose something else if: your priority is a fully closed mystery with a single factual timeline and a clearly confirmed continuation.

Final assessment

Wayward works best as a psychological and institutional thriller rather than as a puzzle box that must be solved scene by scene. Its strongest idea is the way a community can make control feel benevolent, while its most divisive choice is refusing to remove all uncertainty from the ending. The result is an uneasy, thematically focused limited series about adolescence, conformity, family, and the danger of confusing belonging with safety.
