That confusion helps explain how unsupported claims gained attention; it does not make those claims true.
WIRED’s October 29, 2025 video discussion features reporter David Gilbert, author Nina Jankowicz, and Boston University professor Joan Donovan examining the narratives and how they spread. The video page says conspiracy theories appeared within hours and persisted a month later. The reporting below separates that discussion’s subject from what investigators and fact-checkers established.

Watch WIRED: “Why Conspiracy Theories Took Hold When Charlie Kirk Died”. Released October 29, 2025, the video is hosted by WIRED reporter David Gilbert, with author Nina Jankowicz and Boston University professor Joan Donovan.
Gilbert frames the subject this way: “Conspiracy theories about the assassination of Charlie Kirk exploded online in the hours and days after his death.” He adds that “A month later, they still persist.” Those lines describe the video’s focus; they are not a measurement of how many people saw or believed particular claims.

What happened, and what was established
The FBI says Kirk was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Its Utah Valley Shooting Updates page says a suspect is in custody and describes investigative evidence, including the shooter’s route, a firearm and ammunition left nearby, and trace evidence from the rooftop scene. The FBI’s description is an account of the investigation, not a court verdict.
In the two days before officials publicly identified the suspect, online users and commentators circulated guesses and false claims. The Associated Press reported misidentifications, old images and video presented as current, and inaccurate claims about the suspect’s background. Reuters separately documented unrelated people falsely presented as suspects, fabricated or manipulated headline material, and a real headline whose displayed timestamp was used to imply advance knowledge.

Why the first rumors spread so quickly
People were filling an information vacuum
In the immediate aftermath of a high-profile shooting, the basic facts can emerge more slowly than social posts. In this case, AP documented false suspect identifications while officials had not yet released suspect information. That gap helps explain why speculation circulated, but it cannot establish that any particular claim was accurate or coordinated.
Different forms of misleading material reinforced confusion
The early claims were not all the same. Some named the wrong person; others repurposed unrelated footage, manipulated headlines, or used timestamps to suggest that someone knew about the shooting in advance. These examples show distinct ways confusion can spread, not proof of one central operation.

Chatbots also returned errors
CBS News reported that Grok generated ten posts incorrectly identifying a suspect before authorities released the identity. The incorrect name and face were already circulating on X by the time Grok corrected itself. Reuters also found chatbot answers that wrongly addressed whether Kirk had died and whether official statements were genuine. These specific failures show that AI tools sometimes amplified bad information; they do not establish that AI began or drove the broader wave.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox warned about bots from foreign adversaries, according to CBS. That is Cox’s warning, not independent attribution of the specific false posts to a foreign government.

How the claims changed over time

PolitiFact quotes University of Miami political science professor Joseph Uscinski, who studies conspiracy theories, saying the event was “a big event that received national coverage and attention.” Its retrospective also quotes University of Oregon associate professor Whitney Phillips on how the narratives became multidirectional rather than following one unifying thread. Together, those observations help put the later theories in context without showing that all misinformation came from one political camp. PolitiFact reports that many later narratives were promoted by people who shared Kirk’s political beliefs, while also discussing claims from other directions.

The timeline supports a careful explanation: early uncertainty created conditions in which guesses and misleading material could circulate; later claims developed into broader conspiracy narratives. That sequence is a reasoned interpretation of the documented reporting, not a measured causal finding that identifies why each person shared or believed a claim.

- Established: Reporting documented false suspect identities, reused or unrelated media, misleading headline material, and incorrect chatbot answers.
- Not established by these reports: which platform produced the most exposure, how many people believed a particular theory, or a total volume of conspiracy posts.
- Important distinction: a claim’s virality, repetition, or apparent timestamp is not independent evidence that it is true.
For the later claims, PolitiFact’s retrospective provides the relevant assessment: the prominent versions it reviewed were not backed by credible evidence. The FBI’s investigation updates describe evidence gathered in the case; claims about motive or responsibility should not be presented as established beyond what investigators and courts have established.
