What you can do is search for the phrases creators actually use, then judge each clip on four visible criteria: whether the look is recognizable when the timer runs out, how well the creator handles the pressure, how funny or expressive the clip is, and how much it varies from the others. This guide explains the format, what the reporting from 2020 does and does not establish, and how to build your own shortlist.
What the one-minute makeup challenge is
The core rule is simple: a person tries to complete a makeup look within 60 seconds, usually with a visible timer or a countdown on screen. The clip is filmed in one take or close to it, so the viewer sees every decision, including the wrong ones.
The rule leaves one important question open. What counts as “full” makeup? Athens Voice, reporting on February 29, 2020, noted that participants define a finished look differently, and that many attempts are entertaining precisely because nobody finishes everything they set out to do. Where the trend came from, and what the record shows
CafeMom’s account of the challenge, published February 26, 2020, described TikTok creators racing to build a look against a clock and characterized the clips as chaotic and entertaining. The same report included examples from Kyra Gallego, Huda Kattan, Megan Robertson, and Tarte Cosmetics. (CafeMom, February 26, 2020)

Frontrow, also reporting on February 26, 2020, credited Kyra Gallego’s post with helping the challenge spread, and described a routine running from foundation through concealer, powder, blush, bronzer, eye shadow, brows, mascara, an attempted eyeliner step, lipstick, and setting spray. It also reported participation from Huda Beauty, Sephora France, and Tarte Cosmetics. (Frontrow, February 26, 2020; the article is in Japanese.)
Treat all of this as a record of what was reported in early 2020. It shows how the format began and which brands joined in at that time. It does not establish that any of those brands, creators, or clips are still active on TikTok, or that the challenge is trending now.

The original prompt, as CafeMom reproduced it, read: “ONE MINUTE MAKEUP CHALLENGE!! SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT” followed by a request to tag the poster with the hashtag #oneminutemakeupchallenge. The original post also contained emoji, which the reproduction rendered as question marks, so quote the wording without them.
Why no list can be called the “best”
A ranking requires a current, verifiable measure, and the sources available here do not provide one. A third-party hashtag aggregator, Urlebird, displayed 146.2 million views for #oneminutemakeupchallenge when its page was crawled. The page does not state the year, the figure is generated by a third party rather than reported by TikTok, and it changes as views accumulate. Use it, at most, as a rough sign that the hashtag is large, not as a current statistic. (Urlebird hashtag page)

View counts, likes, and whether a given creator is still posting all change constantly. Any list you read that names “the best” clips should be checked against the live posts on the day you watch them.
How to find current videos
- Open TikTok on your phone or in a desktop browser while signed in or signed out, depending on your preference.
- Search for the phrases creators use: “one minute makeup challenge,” “60 second makeup challenge,” or the hashtag #oneminutemakeupchallenge. Searching for “Can you beat Huda Beauty” will surface clips that reference the 2020 format directly.
- Open the results and switch to the Videos view, which is usually one of the tabs at the top of search results. Tab names can change with app updates, so look for the label that lists individual clips.
- Check each clip’s posting date, which appears on the post itself. Older clips may be unavailable or restricted in your region.
- Save or note the clips that pass the criteria below. Keep a short list instead of watching in an endless feed, which makes comparison harder.
How to judge which clips are the best
Because “best” is subjective, state your selection method when you share a list. The following four criteria are visible in every clip and are easy to apply consistently.

A clip does not need to score well on all four. A creator who finishes a full look with calm technique may be less entertaining than one who fails spectacularly but shows a sharp reaction. Decide in advance which criteria matter most to you, and say so.

If you want to attempt the challenge, the historical routines are a useful checklist. Reporting from 2020 described foundation, concealer, powder, blush, bronzer, eye shadow, brow product, mascara, lipstick, and setting spray. Frontrow also noted an attempted eyeliner step, which suggests that even the reported participants did not expect every step to fit into the minute. - Set a visible 60-second timer and film from the start, so the clip matches the format.
- Pick a simple target look before you start, such as base, brows, and lip, and decide in advance what counts as finished.
- Keep products within reach and open them before the timer begins, since opening packaging is the most common time loss.
Final thoughts
The best way to watch the one-minute makeup challenge is to search the phrases above, collect a short set of recent clips, and rank them with the four criteria. That approach gives you a list you can defend, even though no authoritative current ranking exists. The reporting from 2020 explains the format’s origins, not its present state.
