NASA’s holiday “fireplace” video swaps burning logs for the exhaust of a Space Launch System rocket. It is an approximately eight-hour, 4K-style ambience video built from a decorative fireplace scene, looping archival footage from the Artemis I launch, and a mix of fire-crackle and rocket audio. It is not a live launch, a new engine test, or a heater—but it is an unusually entertaining NASA-themed yule log.
The video was highlighted by HotHardware on November 30, 2024. Use NASA’s own upload if it is available; seasonal videos can be renamed, archived, or removed, and the source report did not preserve a dependable official URL.
What you are watching
The format is familiar: a long, static holiday background intended to play on a television or monitor. The twist is NASA’s visual treatment. A stock-style illustrated fireplace frames repeated launch footage, with Artemis and Orion graphics appearing as part of the presentation. The rocket material is archival footage from November 16, 2022, rather than eight hours of continuously new video.
The soundtrack reportedly combines low-level rocket-engine sound with crackling-fire effects. That makes it a designed mix, not necessarily an unedited recording from the launch pad. If you expect a silent, gentle yule log, the deep engine rumble may be a surprise—especially on a large television or soundbar.

Which rocket supplies the “fire”?
The footage shows NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) lifting off for Artemis I. The visual emphasis is on the four liquid-fueled RS-25 engines mounted beneath the SLS core stage. Two large solid rocket boosters also helped propel the vehicle from the pad, although they are less visually distinct in the fireplace-style loop.
NASA’s promotional description, as reported by HotHardware, puts the SLS configuration’s combined liftoff thrust at about 8.8 million pounds. That figure refers to the rocket’s propulsion system—four RS-25 engines plus the two boosters—not to anything the video itself produces. Likewise, the report cites temperatures of up to roughly 6,000°F for the RS-25 engines. That is a technical claim about engine operation, not the temperature of every visible part of the exhaust plume.

Why the Artemis I footage matters
Artemis I was the first integrated flight test of NASA’s deep-space system: the SLS rocket, Orion spacecraft, and the ground systems needed to launch them. SLS sent Orion on an uncrewed lunar mission, allowing NASA to test the vehicle before crewed Artemis flights.

The mission lasted 25 days, 10 hours, and 53 minutes, traveling about 1.4 million miles. During atmospheric reentry, Orion reached approximately 24,581 mph. Those milestones give the looping “fireplace” images some real historical context: this is footage of the launch that began a major test of NASA’s return-to-the-Moon architecture.

Is it a real fireplace or an AI-generated video?
No. It is a composited, illustrated fireplace setting with rocket footage inserted into the scene. NASA reportedly described some surrounding decorative elements as AI-created. That qualification matters: it does not mean the launch footage was generated by artificial intelligence. The rocket images come from archival Artemis I material, while AI was reportedly used only for some decorative fireplace details.

- Start with NASA’s official channels. Search NASA’s verified YouTube channel or website for the rocket-engine fireplace/yule-log video and check the current runtime and resolution.
- Use the HotHardware report as the identifying reference. Its November 2024 article describes the exact video: an approximately eight-hour presentation using Artemis I launch footage.
- Be cautious with mirrors. If the NASA upload is unavailable, label any surviving third-party copy as an unofficial reupload. Do not assume that a similarly titled video is the NASA version.
Availability may change outside the holiday season. A current player may offer 4K, but the report’s 4K description should be confirmed on the live listing rather than assumed for every mirror.

Is it relaxing?
That depends on what you want from a fireplace video. The imagery can work as holiday background for a space-themed gathering, classroom, science club, or family viewing session. The loop also gives non-specialists an approachable way to see genuine launch footage.
It is less suitable if you want near-silence or a purely natural fire. Rocket audio can be conspicuous at higher volume, and a long 4K stream may use substantial bandwidth or fall back to a lower resolution on older devices. Start with the volume low, particularly when using a soundbar or home-theater system.
Bottom line
NASA’s rocket-engine fireplace is best understood as a novelty yule log with real aerospace history behind it. The fireplace is decorative, the rocket footage loops, and the sound is an edited ambience mix—but the source material is the dramatic Artemis I launch. For space fans and anyone who wants holiday background viewing with considerably more thrust than a conventional log fire, it is a genuinely fun choice.
