Bob Dylan performed Rick Nelson’s “Garden Party” as the encore at the Outlaw Music Festival in Chula Vista, California, on May 15, 2025. The surprise choice is notable for the song’s own connection to Dylan—not for any documented controversy at the show.
Watch Bob Dylan perform “Garden Party”
Audience-captured footage of the performance is linked in JamBase’s report on the Chula Vista concert. Dylan played the song at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre during the Outlaw Music Festival Tour; JamBase identifies it as the encore.
The Official Bob Dylan Site lists May 15, 2025 as the first and last date he performed “Garden Party,” with one performance recorded on the song’s official entry.
Why Dylan’s song choice has an extra layer
“Garden Party” was written by Rick Nelson, as the official Dylan song entry also credits. NME’s contemporaneous report connects the song to Nelson’s Madison Square Garden oldies performance and notes its references to Dylan. That history makes Dylan’s live cover a pointed lyrical connection, but the available reporting does not establish that he intended it as a reenactment or statement.

The word “shocking” can suggest a scandal or crowd uproar, neither of which is documented in the coverage of this performance. What is established is a surprise choice: a song that recounts an episode in Nelson’s career and invokes Dylan.
Rick Nelson’s original album context
Nelson’s album Garden Party was released by Decca in November 1972, with Nelson credited as producer, according to the Rick Nelson International Club of Great Britain’s record catalog. That places the song in its original album-era context; the catalog entry does not establish which editions are currently available to buy.
