Spoiler warning: this article covers the House of the Dragon season 2 finale and related Game of Thrones imagery.
Yes. The weirwood vision includes a figure of Daenerys Targaryen, shown the morning after her three dragons hatch. But Daemon does not recognize her. The director of the finale, Geeta Vasant Patel, has said plainly that Daemon does not know who Daenerys is. The image is there to change what Daemon is willing to do, not to show him the identity of a future queen.
What the sequence shows
TIME’s finale explainer describes a run of flashes in the vision: a young Three-Eyed Raven, White Walkers, and Daenerys after her dragons hatch. TIME reads these images as a bridge from Daemon’s Harrenhal vision to the Game of Thrones-era Westeros and the prophecy in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. That is the audience-level reading: viewers who know the later story can place each image.
The question of who sees what is separate. Daenerys appears in the montage among other images, and Patel told ELLE that she was listed without any description. Her words were that Daemon “doesn’t know who Daenerys is; he’s not having a fan moment.” Recognition belongs to the viewer, not to the character.

Three layers of meaning in one image
Most confusion comes from merging three different questions. Keeping them apart makes the scene easier to read.
| Layer | What it covers | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Audience recognition | Who viewers can identify in the flashes | TIME identifies Daenerys after her dragons hatch, along with the Three-Eyed Raven and White Walkers. |
| Daemon’s understanding | What the character actually grasps | Patel says Daemon does not know who Daenerys is and need not understand the message right away. |
| Creators’ purpose | Why the scene is in the episode | Patel says the vision had to move Daemon off the course he had followed all season and toward supporting Rhaenyra. |
Each row can be true without the others. A viewer can recognize Daenerys while Daemon sees only a figure and a sign that the dragons are returning.

What the creators say the vision is for
In an interview with TheWrap published on August 4, 2024, Patel framed the scene around a single instruction. Her line was: “You are meant to follow Rhaenyra. She is meant to be queen.” The vision, in this reading, is about Daemon’s ambitions. He sees that dragons return after the dynasty’s dragons have died, and he recognizes that his own plans are a small part of a larger story.
Sky’s post-finale coverage adds two points from the creative team. Co-creator Sara Hess is quoted describing the vision as picking up with Daenerys finding the dragon eggs, and as placing Daenerys as a descendant of Daemon and Rhaenyra. Showrunner Ryan Condal said that Daemon and Rhaenyra will not themselves save the realm from the White Walkers, but that their actions shape how the future unfolds. The scene therefore suggests lineage and consequence. It does not announce that Daemon will be the one who defeats the threat.

What remains open: Helaena
Helaena’s place in the vision is the least settled part of the scene. Phia Saban told TheWrap that viewers could read her as moving through the dream world on her own, as a projection of Daemon’s guilt, or as witnessing the events at the same time as Daemon. Saban said the choice was left to the audience. If you come away with one reading, it is an interpretation, not a rule the show has confirmed.

What the scene does not establish
- It does not show Daemon identifying Daenerys by name or by appearance.
- It does not confirm who fulfills the prophecy of the Prince That Was Promised. Visual links to the later story are not an answer to that question.
- The coverage reviewed here does not establish that this exact vision occurs in Fire & Blood, Martin’s book about the Targaryens. The prequel connection is real in the show’s framing, but this specific scene’s source in the books is not stated.
How to read the scene on a rewatch
- Separate what you know from what the character knows. Daenerys is recognizable to you; she is not recognizable to Daemon.
- Watch Daemon’s reaction, not the montage. The scene is built to change his direction.
- Treat Helaena’s presence as open. Choose a reading only if it helps you follow the episode.
