The March 2024 claim that the BBC had been put on alert for an imminent royal announcement was unsubstantiated by contemporaneous reporting. Forbes said the BBC had not publicly confirmed it and did not respond to an inquiry; FOX reported that no evidence supported the claim. Those reports address what was established publicly, not every possible internal BBC communication.
What the claim said
In mid-March 2024, online posts asserted that the BBC had been told to prepare for an unspecified major announcement from the Royal Family. The claim circulated amid intense online speculation about Catherine, Princess of Wales, after her January announcement of abdominal surgery and a period away from public duties.
Forbes reported on March 17 that the claim remained unconfirmed by the key parties and that the BBC had not publicly said it was alerted. Forbes also wrote: “The BBC has not replied to Forbes about whether they were alerted to any pending Royal announcement.” That was Forbes describing an unanswered inquiry, not a statement from the BBC. What the reporting established
FOX’s March 18 report said there was no evidence supporting the BBC-standby claim. It also reported that an X Community Note called the specific assertion about BBC Events false. That platform annotation, as summarized by FOX, is not a direct BBC statement. FOX 13 Seattle, March 18, 2024

The most accurate conclusion is therefore that the viral claim was unsubstantiated in public reporting and was reported as false. The available coverage did not establish whether any private communication took place inside or with the BBC.
Why a later palace announcement does not confirm the rumor
A separate palace announcement later in March should not be treated as proof that the earlier alert claim was true. Nieman Journalism Lab’s retrospective distinguishes the viral standby rumor from that later announcement, characterizes the earlier claim as dubious, and says the trigger for its rapid spread was unclear. For a rumor about an impending announcement, check whether the claim is attributed to an identifiable source, whether the named organization has confirmed it, and whether later events are being incorrectly used to validate an earlier post. In this case, the contemporary reports found no public confirmation or supporting evidence, and the later palace communication was a distinct event.
