The evidence does not support the claim that Sean Astin was broadly unpopular with the Lord of the Rings cast. Reports from the films’ production described friendships and colleagues’ support, while Astin later acknowledged that some people might have been frustrated by his memoir. He said no one had told him so directly and that he believed his relationships remained intact.
What contemporaries reported about Astin and the cast
A December 2002 TV Guide report described close friendships formed during filming in New Zealand. Astin spoke about spending time socially with Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood, and the article said the hobbit actors stayed in touch.
A January 2003 Los Angeles Times profile offered further examples of positive regard. Wood called Astin “a great guy, so genuine.” Makeup and effects artist Richard Taylor, producer Barrie M. Osborne and screenwriter Philippa Boyens also spoke positively about him. The profile reported that cast and crew volunteered to help with a short film Astin proposed during the long shoot.
What Astin said about possible resentment over his memoir
The clearest evidence of possible tension comes from a 2004 TV Guide interview about Astin’s memoir, There and Back Again: An Actor’s Story. He said he was sure some colleagues might have felt anger or disappointment about the book, but added that nobody had communicated that to him directly. He said he believed his friendships, professional relationships and alliances were fine.

He recognized that excerpts might leave some readers with a negative impression, but that possibility does not establish that the cast generally disliked him. The available account points to a narrower possibility: some colleagues may have objected to or felt frustrated by what he wrote.
What later relationships show—and what they cannot prove
In a July 2026 Guardian interview, Astin said he still sees fellow hobbit actors Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan regularly at conventions, and that they enjoy spending time together. This is evidence of ongoing ties among those four actors, not a record of every cast member’s private feelings.

Contemporary reporting and Astin’s own later remarks do not establish that he was unpopular with the cast. They describe warm relationships and professional support, alongside Astin’s qualified acknowledgment that some colleagues might have been disappointed or frustrated by his memoir. Neither the reporting nor the interviews can prove what every cast member felt, so the most accurate conclusion is limited: possible disagreement over the book is not evidence of widespread personal dislike.
