Yes—but only briefly, in early 2019. After the Blockbuster in Toowoomba closed in January, the Morley store in Perth was described as Australia’s last. It closed at the end of March 2019, so the claim is historical, not a description of a store open today.
Where was Australia’s last Blockbuster?
It was in Morley, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The store was owned by Lyn and John Borszeky. On 14 January 2019, PerthNow reported that the closure of the Toowoomba outlet had left Morley as the last Blockbuster in Australia, calling it the “ultimate survivor.” PerthNow’s January 2019 report records the moment the store inherited that distinction.
When did the Morley Blockbuster close?
It ceased trading at the end of March 2019. SBS reported on 1 March that the outlet would close at month’s end; PerthNow later described the closure as taking place in March. Lyn Borszeky told SBS/AAP: “We put in a pretty good effort to be the last one in Australia, I suppose, but it was going to happen eventually and now is the time.” SBS’s closure report explains why the headline belongs to a short-lived chapter rather than the present.
What made the store matter to its customers?
Borszeky said loyal customers valued more than choosing a title from a shelf: “We still have a lot of loyal customers who enjoy the experience of coming to a store and discussing movies with the staff.” Her account points to the shop’s social role as well as its rentals, but it is an owner’s recollection, not a survey of customers.

She also described changing competition in personal terms: “When the digital TV stations came in it had an impact on us, but when Netflix arrived we took the biggest hit.” PerthNow reported Borszeky’s figures that the store usually signed up 25 new members in a week and had signed up 61 in the week before its January 2019 story. Those are owner-reported numbers tied to a burst of publicity, not independently audited membership totals.
What happened to the Blockbuster sign?
In June 2021, PerthNow reported that a Perth movie fan had privately bought the large sign that stood above the Morley store for $750. That report documents a single sale; it does not establish an ongoing shop or current merchandise listing. PerthNow’s 2021 account of the sign follows one piece of the store’s physical legacy after the closure.

What the headline does—and does not—mean
“Perth is home to last Blockbuster in Australia” describes the situation after Toowoomba’s outlet closed and before Morley stopped trading. It does not mean a Blockbuster remains open in Perth now. The former Morley premises’ current tenant is not established in the cited reporting, and the 2019 account of a surviving franchise in Bend, Oregon, is also a dated snapshot rather than a current worldwide store count.
