Not for the rest of Season 3. Gina Rodriguez’s Marion Alba was absent for a stretch, and co-showrunner Liz Heldens said in April 2025 that Marion would not return before the finale. But a later cast listing credits Rodriguez in Episode 17. The evidence supports a conspicuous gap, not a confirmed permanent exit. Marion was also a new romantic interest for Will, not an officially designated replacement for Angie.
Who was Will Trent’s “replacement” storyline about?
The likely reference is Marion Alba, played by Gina Rodriguez. Rodriguez joined Season 3 as a series regular, playing a new assistant district attorney in Atlanta. Marion entered Will’s professional orbit after his Season 2 breakup with Angie and became a romantic interest. That positioning may have made her seem like Angie’s replacement, but the available reporting does not establish that she was formally cast or described as one. TVLine’s casting report covered her arrival.
Angie Polaski, played by Erika Christensen, remained a separate character. ABC’s cast page identifies Christensen as Angie; Marion’s role in Will’s romantic storyline did not amount to a production announcement that Angie had been replaced.
Why did Marion’s absence look like a write-out?
By April 15, 2025, TVLine reported that Rodriguez had appeared in 10 of Season 3’s 18 episodes. In an interview, co-showrunner Liz Heldens said Marion would not resurface before the season ended. Heldens described a broad storytelling constraint: “It’s funny… when we started [Season 3], we were like, ‘Oh, 18 episodes is the biggest order we’ve ever done!’ And then when we got to the end, we were like, ‘We don’t have enough runway for everybody.’” TVLine’s April 15 report gives the context.

The comment explains why the season could not give every character as much room as intended; it does not say Marion was permanently written out. The 10-of-18 figure is TVLine’s count as of that report, not an official ABC statistic, and it should not be read as her final Season 3 total.
Did Marion return before Season 3 ended?
Yes. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 3, Episode 17 cast listing includes Gina Rodriguez as Marion Alba. That later credit shows she appeared after the April interview’s expectation that she would not return before the end of the season. It does not, by itself, establish the size of her role in the episode or any Season 4 plans.

It does not prove that Marion was removed to reunite Will and Angie. In a Season 3 finale interview, Heldens described the romantic possibility between Will and Angie as still open, while also discussing Angie’s decisions about her baby and her relationship with Seth. An open possibility is not a confirmed reconciliation, nor does it explain Marion’s absence. TV Insider’s finale interview reports Heldens’ comments.
