What happened in the 1982 Tylenol murders?
Between September 29 and 30, 1982, seven Chicago-area residents ingested cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules, according to the FBI’s account of the case. The poisonings prompted police and media efforts to warn the public. The FBI says no one was charged with the murders because of a lack of evidence.
What was James Lewis charged with?
Lewis was charged with attempting to extort $1 million from Johnson & Johnson. That prosecution concerned the extortion attempt; it was not a murder charge or proof that he poisoned the capsules. The FBI makes the distinction explicitly: “Although no one could be charged with the murders due to a lack of evidence, James Lewis—a 37-year-old New York man—was charged with attempting to extort $1 million dollars from Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Tylenol.”
Lewis became a prominent suspect in the public account of the case. CBS Chicago reports that after his extortion conviction, he volunteered to assist the FBI with its investigation. That involvement does not establish that he committed the murders. The available official account supports his extortion charge, not a conviction for the poisonings.

Does a new 2026 lead change the picture?
A September 23, 2026, Associated Press report says Ada County investigators in Idaho considered whether deceased Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski might be connected to the Chicago poisonings. According to the report, Betkouski died by cyanide poisoning more than 40 years earlier, and investigators found cyanide in his desk. The compound was described as different from the cyanide used in the Chicago killings.
The AP reported that Chicago police were in contact with Idaho authorities to assess a possible connection. It did not report a confirmed link, say Betkouski was responsible, or establish that investigators had cleared Lewis. The lead is a reported possibility, not a solved-case finding.

What does Netflix’s docuseries cover?
Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders is the documentary series listed on Netflix’s Canada catalog page. Its synopsis describes the cyanide-laced Tylenol deaths, and police and media efforts to issue a nationwide warning. Netflix availability varies by territory, so a Canadian listing does not confirm that the series is available everywhere.
This Netflix series is distinct from Paramount+’s Painkiller: The Tylenol Murders, a separate 2023 docuseries. A documentary can explore a suspect theory, but the key distinction remains: the FBI says no one was charged with the 1982 murders, and Lewis’s extortion case was separate.
